The Amway is so unique in the Grand Rapids area, overall loved having my wedding here and could not imagine it having it anywhere else. All of our guests loved downtown Grand Rapids, and the convenience of having our wedding at a hotel where they can crash after. We had our ceremony at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, and our reception was at the Amway. The food and service the day of was great, however it was very stressful leading up to the day of. We are from out of town, which the coordinator knew about as we were venue shopping. Immediately after we reserve our reception space for the Pantlind ballroom, we were told there were no room blocks, or bridal suite, available to book the night before our wedding for ourselves and our guests. Obviously as a coordinator, this is something that we should have been aware of as we would have easily just picked a different date. It ended up working out that we had some rooms available at the JW which is right next door, but took a LOT of crying and communicating back and forth to get this figured out. We had to confirm with our coordinator multiple times about things we went over clearly before. For example, had our bar selection incorrect, head table number incorrect, etc. A lot of little things that I only noticed because I am extremely type A, but annoying that I kept having to confirm multiple times little details that we confirmed with before. Overall, the actual venue is so beautiful, has that classic and traditional feel we were looking for, but the coordination before was pretty painful. Sometimes felt like they did not care as there are so many other events going on at the same time. Reviewed on 29-08-2023
Allison Nyhuis(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 24-09-2022 Overall, we are thankful we had our wedding here in the beautiful Imperial Ballroom! There was no other venue in Grand Rapids that compared, in our opinion, to the elegant, timeless aesthetic we so dreamed of. We would not change a thing about our actual wedding being at the Amway - the food was excellent, bartenders and servers were professional and kind, and the venue location is unbeatable. However, we did have a few negative experiences with the wedding coordinator and hotel logistics. Below is an honest review of what went wrong so you know what to be aware of.1. We loved our first assigned wedding coordinator, she was quick to respond, passionate, and made us feel valued. However, she left for a new role, leaving us with the exact opposite of a coordinator. Weeks upon months went by without our new coordinator, Alyssa, responding to several emails. We had to call management to finally get a response from her 3 months before the wedding. I knew at this point a day-of coordinator on my end was a must - and thank goodness we hired one! On the day of the wedding, the Amway coordinator did not show, with no warning, leaving my vendors guessing. 2. Another bummer about the Amway was that our event was during ArtPrize, and the hotel filled up much sooner than they estimated. I called for more rooms, and they insisted they didn't have any more. My dad, who is more firm than me, then called and more rooms appeared. Frustrating from my perspective that \"killing them with kindness\" did not work, but glad our guests had more rooms to book. 3. Lastly, the hotel valet service was majorly backed up on the Saturday of our wedding, making many wait a long time to check-in and late for our ceremony. Reviewed on 23-01-2023
Sara Alkmin(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-03-2022 The Amway Grand Plaza is a dream wedding venue. The ballrooms are stunning, and I enjoyed being an Amway Bride. There were several occasions when I felt like small potatoes compared to their expensive conference clients, as many emails with the venue staff went unanswered for weeks or even months. However, they put on a beautiful wedding for us. We appreciated their flexibility during the pandemic and that they comped our champagne on the big day. While they did not honor our reduced rate for our wedding night as advertised, they were overall a beautiful venue. I do recommend them as long as you're extremely organized and Type A. Sarah Kiel(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 06-07-2019 We got married in the Pantlind Ballroom, and all of our friends and family couldn't stop gushing about how beautiful it was. The event coordinator staff (we worked with Katie) was simply amazing from the very first meeting to the day after the wedding. They are incredibly responsive and detail oriented- their service staff was top notch with every moment of our reception running on time, food going down at perfect pace and the food was fantastic. The top compliments we've been hearing about from family and friends was the professionalism and elegance of the service at the dinner, the delicious cake (even people who don't love cake said they loved it) and just the overall attention to detail. Pros: 1. Excellent attention to all details and open to tweaking of menus 2. Fast and professional communication and estimates- their event coordinator staff (especially Katie Dietrich- was just beyond incredible)3. Multiple different ballrooms for different sized weddings 4. Exquisite food and dessert 5. Amazing service during the reception with the head of waitstaff finding us before we even walked into the ballroom to check in and see if we wanted a cocktail in between photos at the hotel and entering the ballroom and continued to check in with us periodically throughout the night. Even had two boxes of dinners sent up and stored in our hotel room for after the reception in case we didn't get to finish our food. There are no real cons, but things to be aware of: The Amway is very all inclusive so you are not allowed to have outside caterers or bakers so you must use their menus/bar/bakery but all of them are incredibly high quality. Overall, the Amway made our wedding reception the most fun and elegant party we'll ever throw! Superior service all around! Reviewed on 04-08-2019

Anonymous (wedding party)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 30-09-2017 Terrible! I cannot fully express how disappointed and frustrated we are with this facility. While at a wedding of 140 guests we left personal items of a cell phone and wallet under our seats during the ceremony while I was performing my services as the wedding officiant. We left the room while the happy couple were taking photos and returned a short while later to find that our things had been STOLEN. When questioned, the staff was cavalier and unhelpful. We were even LIED TO when the employee assigned to help us resolve the matter told us that the room was under video surveillance when it was not. We were patient and understanding while working with them but to date our issue is still unresolved and the management has washed their hands of our concerns. The negligence in leaving personal items is ours, however the way the security team and management was UNWILLING TO HELP and unapologetic about the circumstances is where our frustration lies. Based on extensive review of the events of the night and the personnel with access to the room, we feel without question that our items were STOLEN BY THE STAFF. We have been told that there is nothing more that can be done to help our situation so all we can do now is warn others that this beautiful venue is sadly a harbor to prey on affluent party guests. It is unfortunate that their staff are not held to the high standard that the hotel boasts and that the facility allows THIEVES under their employ to take advantage of their well paying guests. If you value your friends and family (and your belongings) I would encourage you to look elsewhere for your event or risk being preyed upon by event staff. Reviewed on 31-07-2016

Kellie Member(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 11-07-2015 We had a room block at the Amway for our wedding. From the start, our guests had problems booking rooms. Our guests would call and be told that the hotel was full or the block was full (even though the wedding was over 6 months away), when in fact the hotel was not. I had to exchange countless calls and emails with the wedding coordinators and each time it would take days to find a solution. The experience we had at the hotel the weekend of the wedding was to say the least disappointing. They gave me a room with a children's bed for the night of my wedding (which I did not request, I do not have children). When I went to the front desk, I was told I had specifically requested that room (again, which I did not). So not only was I given a room I didn't request, the front desk staff accused me of lying about it. We were at the front desk for 3 hours checking in and waiting for them to find me a room (even though I had booked it 6 months in advance). Upon arriving at my rehearsal dinner, my guests complained of poor front desk and bell service, musty smelling rooms, dirty bathrooms, and countless other problems. There were numerous other problems that weekend - my room was never cleaned (we even called and requested it-no one showed up until the day we left), the bell staff was of no assistance even though we had 3 carts to bring up, I could keep going...I understand that hotels are busy and that human error happens, but what we experienced that weekend was extremely poor customer service, a major lack of attention to detail, and at times, treating guests disrespectfully. Also, over a month after my wedding, I have contacted the Amway 3 times to discuss my problems that weekend and no one has contacted me back. That shows how much they care about and respect their guests. Reviewed on 16-08-2015

The Amway is the equivalent of Bride Wars “The Plaza” for a Grand Rapids bride. I write this as my experience and not the standard experience with the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and its staff.\r\rTo the good:\r•\tThe rooms blocked for our guests were to be cheaper than anywhere else during Art Prize.\r•\tWe were able to book over a year in advance.\r•\tWhen we arrived to our cocktail hour, we were able to part take and were asked if we would like a drink. \r•\tOur banquet captain took great care of us throughout the whole evening.\r•\tThe food was delicious.\r•\tThe bar went from a full service upstairs to a beer and wine only bar downstairs after cocktail hour. \r•\tThe bride and groom cake design was very nice and turned out well.\r•\tOur tower suite was wonderfully accommodating.\r\rTo the not so great:\r•\tOur block of hotel rooms was not addressed by the main coordinator and caused us much embarrassment when family tried to reserve rooms and called us to say we had no block available. \r•\tFor our taste testing, we selected dishes from the list in our packet. The day of our tasting, we were given the full menu, after already choosing what we thought our small list of options were. Also, each dinner comes with desert or a credit, something we learned after the fact, again.\r•\tWe planned our wedding from another state and time zone. Both working a 6:30am-4:00pm job only ever caused email conversations, were there were huge confusions and weekend phone calls meetings.\r•\tEmails often were filled with errors in capitalizing or grammar. \r•\tIn working with our linens, we were under the impression that the Amway would provide floor length linens for the dining. This ended up not being the case but thankfully the head events coordinator was able to step help us get the linens free of charge\r•\tI requested a list of rules that the Amway has so I could avoid any more confusion. Such a document did not exist because it would have some many points to make (from the catering manager). I stated that I did expect a place like the Amway to have such a document since my church had a minimum 7 page document with such limitations.\r•\tWe were told we were late on a payment at the meeting we had two days before the wedding and that we would be charged our full estimated bill (~$4,000). This charge was supposed to be placed on our card that day and we were to get our bill to review and then settle the rest of the cost. After getting back from our honeymoon, our catering manager had not contacted us and there were no charges were on our credit card. We had to seek her out for an answer. She stated we would be credited, but did not say if it would be on the additional payment we were supposed to make or on the 1 ½ times the room cost we had already paid.\r•\tOur bride and groom cake was more than half cream cheese filling. We much would have preferred more than half cake.\r\rAll in all, the main staff at the Amway were so wonderful to work with, as well as the events director. The space itself was great and not paying hourly for the bar was a great decision for our group of ~120. Our catering manager was overpaid for the service provided. From what I have heard from other brides and my vendors (seasoned in the Amway, but none interacting with this coordinator), other coordinators really do make this a great process and celebrate you. I pray that anyone who chooses to live out their childhood dream of an Amway reception gets the experience they are seeking.\r Reviewed on 05-11-2014
Amanda Luymes(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 19-09-2014 We could not have had a better experience for our wedding weekend than we did with the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. I contacted their wedding coordinator, Grace Hill, about 8 months prior to our wedding and she took care of us like it was her own wedding. She was responsive, honest, kind, and so easy to work with. She then assigned me to Katie Dietrich as my catering manager, and she was just as wonderful! \r\rFast forward a few months.... From the moment my bridesmaids and I walked into our getting-ready suite, we were blown away. The suites on the tower side of the hotel had just been renovated and they were absolutely stunning. Even the helpful valet attendees and bellmen were such a pleasure to work with and would drop anything to help us with our things.\r\rWe had our ceremony at our home church in Grand Rapids, but we immediately came back to the hotel for our reception in the Pantlind Ballroom. First and foremost, the room itself emanates an old-world, palace look-and-feel... almost like you are in Versailles, France! The gold-gilded ceilings and mirrored walls just sparkle when the lights are dimmed and you first walk in. \r\rThe meal was not only hands-down the best wedding dinner I've ever had, but one of the best meals of all time! The food was warm, perfectly seasoned, and super fresh. Our servers were very attentive and handled our every need. Don't even get me started on that cake.. We had the red velvet cake with cream cheese filling AND a dark chocolate cake with peanut butter ganache filling. It was to DIE for and all of our guests were over the moon.\r\rThe weekend was perfect, and I could not have hoped for a better wedding than the one we had. Thank you to every single person involved. During the planning phase, I worked primarily with Darrin, who is really an expert at what he does. He was businesslike, organized, and polite throughout the entire process. I don't live in Grand Rapids, so I wasn't able to meet in person until later in the process, but Darrin was extremely flexible and patient with all of the emails and phone calls leading up to our event, right down to last minute decisions and changes. \r\rThe event execution went extremely smoothly - the setup crew arranged things nicely, the staff at Amway worked well with the florist and DJ, and the waitstaff and kitchen crew served an excellent meal for a large crowd of people. Our server for the evening was so prompt and kind - I wish I could recall her name! Also, the chef created a delicious, classic cake based on a picture that I had emailed to Darrin. \r\rThe Amway is clean and well maintained, the rooms and common areas are historic and beautiful. Many of our guests were from out of town, and the Amway provided an excellent first impression of Grand Rapids. The discount room rate was a great value, and after some initial hangups with the booking website, guests had a positive experience. \r\rSelecting the Amway as your venue will certainly cost more than other Grand Rapids venues, however, if it is in your budget, or if you are able to adjust other areas of your budget, this historic and beautiful venue is worth the cost. Rather than stressing about details and coordination, you can leave it up to the staff at Amway, and they will pull together a lovely event for you. \r\rThe Amway will provide a smooth and elegant experience for you and your guests! Whitney Marx(parent)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 03-09-2011 We couldn't have been more please with our event. Having such a wonderful hotel for guests to stay right at the venue made it so convenient, with brunch the next morning right there too. Logistically perfect and absolutely flawless. The service was efficient, the food was outstanding, the cake was a very specially request and the best I've had. The staff really works hard to please. It's the best deal in the city if you want a formal wedding. Reviewed on 25-10-2011

If you want something different from mediocre wedding food, go here. They can personalize your menu also, so you're not forced to just choose a package. Did I mention the cake was delicious??!! Grace coordinates their catering and she is AMAZING, truly a gift from God, esp. since we planned our wedding in 6 weeks. Could not have been more perfect :) Reviewed on 21-08-2011
