Rachel Kroeger(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-10-2022 Great venue! Absolutely no regrets. Kate and Cherry were fabulous to work with and our day went so well. We are located out of state but they made planning so much better! Reviewed on 10-12-2022
Samantha Holm(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 14-10-2022 Gorgeous venue and Great Food! A month later we are still getting compliments about the food and view! We've been told a few times that our buffet was way better than plated meals at the DECC. We were lucky to have the most gorgeous leaves for our day in October. As for the issues, the event coordinator was amazing to get a hold of until the day before the wedding. I didnt hear from her until an hour before our ceremony. She never set up the table for our ceremony. Through all the crazy my personal attendant and brother in law had to run to get a table during the ceremony and then set it up. Had the table been there I don't think we would have had an issue. I was told I would receive instructions for early set up and never did. I was also informed I would receive her cell number for the day of which never happened. We also forgot a tote with some of our most important possessions in the hall. Instead of calling or emailing in the morning it took until we got back from our honeymoon and we had to reach out. There was a binder with our names in plain view inside the clear tote and my mother had asked the day after if anything had been left. Luckily we only live a little over an hour away and we're able to go back quickly and not lose anything. This is just another example of her lacking communication when she is not setting up the bill. We were also made to feel bad when we considered only one entree for the buffet. (\"Oh is that an option? No one ever does that. I don't even have the price written down\")Another large downside was the lack of a bridal suite. This could not have been remedied but should be kept in mind. A friend of mine had a suite and had a much more relaxing hour before her ceremony. We did have a cabin to get ready in but when guests started to arrive there was nowhere to hide from them. Even if we could have made it back to a cabin (couldn't because of the rain) we would have been spotted by the guests parking. Bathrooms were also in an inconvenient location for this issue. We spent some time running between floors. There is also only one alternative for bad weather which is moving into the Ballroom. This would be okay if the Ballroom was not so congested as it is. We had 130 guests (max was 150) and could barely walk between tables. Definitely cannot fit 150 even close to comfortably. It makes sense that you have to do buffet if you have that many because staff could not walk through with trays. Overall we had a great experience. Three stars is considered pretty good but I would give 3.5 if i could. The original event booking coordinator we met with was amazing! I was very sad to have to switch from her to the event coordinator. Hotel staff was sweet and actually gave advice for the weather for when I saw the event coordinator. The biggest reason to book here is for the pictures but don't be shy. You will be walking through the back yards of cabins to get to the good rocks. It ended up being a beautiful day and absolutely loved the bar and waitstaff. Desserts and food were great as well. I wouldn't change a thing about how our day turned out but wanted to make sure others are a little more aware than we were! Reviewed on 29-11-2022

Regina Dolan(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 28-08-2021 The venue is gorgeous and the staff went above and beyond to help make our day special (especially during crazy weather). We ended up altering our timeline at the last minute and starting our ceremony an hour later – the staff adapted quickly and helped us get the ceremony of our dreams! We also got tons and tons of great feedback about the food, delicious! Having the lodge rooms, cabins and lake homes right on property next to the lake is truly unbeatable as well. I would give it a 9/10 (rather than 4/5) because there was some drama with how their leadership team handled COVID over the winter (telling all couples that they wouldn’t allow weddings over 45 people regardless of how the pandemic evolved, CDC regulations, etc.) They later backtracked (thank goodness) but it was a super unnecessary, highly stressful period of time that could have been completely avoided without such knee-jerk reactions. I was also guided to not have a day of wedding coordinator and I will say that’s probably my top #1 regret. There was a lot of little stuff to deal with day of that their day of contact isn’t responsible for and I wish I would have had someone hired specifically to deal with that stuff so it didn’t fall all on me. Still, insanely beautiful all-in-one-place venue and you can’t go wrong having a full weekend surrounded by your family and friends. A few key notes: you have to do catering through them and all guests are required to book a minimum 2-night stay. Reviewed on 22-09-2021

From our first visit to the tasting and every change that came with getting married in 2020, the GSL staff was kind, helpful, and so professional. The kitchen was able to provide us with our dream wedding meal of a build your own burger bar and provided the appropriate accommodations for our guests as well. Mary-Kate Carsi(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 10-10-2020 GSL was AMAZING for us. Due to Covid, we had to change so many things about our wedding. One month before our wedding date, our ceremony venue cancelled on us and we were scrambling to find somewhere new.My wedding planner, Pure Events, reached out to GSL and everything suddenly came together. With the help of our wedding planner and Kate and Hannah at GSL, everything came together for our micro wedding on 10/10/20.The outdoor ceremony was amazing. The ballroom is a ballroom - not my taste at all but we decorated it in a way that I could live with! The food was good, open bar was smooth and they offered us great pricing. I only wish they had more Covid protocols (they had hardly any sanitizing and put out apps as as self serve with shared utensils. Not great in times of a pandemic)This team was SO kind and offered us a great last minute deal. So many vendors/venues have been screwing couples and GSL did the opposite. This is a place I want to support. They showed such character and I feel so lucky we were connected with them. Jennifer Seabloom(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 06-06-2020 After much searching for the perfect venue around Duluth and the North Shore we decided on the Grand Superior Lodge to host our June wedding. We were extremely excited by the lodging options, as we always wanted a community feel at our wedding and wanted to have all of our friends and family in one spot to make the most of the weekend. From our first contact with Hannah and Kate they were both extremely professional, timely in their response, and always willing to work with us on ideas and requests we had. When we visited the resort in January for our walk through and tasting the entire staff where incredibly accommodating and very pleasant to work with. They even allowed us to take a tour of some of the cabins and townhomes to see what our guests would be staying in, and they are incredible!Unfortunately our wedding was planned for June 2020, and as the coronavirus began to spread in the U.S. we had to make a difficult decision to cancel our wedding in late April. From the time we reached out in March to discuss our options both Hannah and Kate were again extremely professional and accommodating in working with us as we weathered the storm for awhile before officially cancelling. While we won’t be able to actually hold our wedding at the Grand Superior Lodge, based on our experience through this process we know it would have been everything we imagined and more. The setting is beautiful, the lodging is incredible and the staff truly is the epitome of “Minnesota Nice”. We’d definitely recommend the Grand Superior Lodge to anyone searching for that special spot for your wedding, and hope to go back someday soon and celebrate our future anniversaries.Drew & Jen Reviewed on 13-05-2020

Then the day of the event everything ran perfectly and there was nothing for me to worry about or check on. Only negative comment is that the room portion of the hotel needs some work. They messed up a handful of our guests rooms and then there was construction going on the cabins. They did compensate us for the construction issue and upgraded the guests rooms that were messed up but it was a bit of a hassle and tainted the otherwise perfect execution of the event. Tena Rytel(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 25-07-2015 Overall, the wedding went amazingly but we had a few bumps in the road. I quarterbacked the entire planning process with support from Nancy, who was great. We had some trouble with front desk staff who were struggling to book rooms in our block, but GSL gave me special access to the amazing Matt at the front desk so they took care of that issue. Note that in order to have music play past 10 pm you need to book 12 rooms in the main lodge that vary from a std 2 queen bed to expensive options (VERY for some). We definitely struggled and had to move people from other rooms in the Lodge and from other hotels (and subsidize them) to fill the block. I never expected it to be so difficult to fill 12 rooms. It may have just been our guest list but either way, it was the MOST frustrating and time consuming part of planning the ENTIRE wedding. Which is a lot to be said. \r\rAnother note, 200 people is a stretch for this place to be comfortable. We had 145-ish people with a special seating arrangement and it was just comfortable enough. \r\rReceived comments from guests and my parents that the bartender was too slow and that the line was really long all night. Pretty sure everyone got their fair share of drinks though, so this is rather a good point for improvement for the GSL to focus on.\r\rOther than those bumps, the wedding went great- we had no special surprises (especially none on the invoice) and lots of custom \"things\" like the seating arrangement, dance floor location, band location, etc went smoothly. The food was amazing (seriously-had custom pierogis made by Chef Chad and they were PHENOMENAL!!) and the vendors worked essentially directly with Nancy which was great for me, the band rocked it and the location can't be beat. Anonymous (bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 15-10-2015 Location is beautiful, lodging is adequate, but the resort service is awful. After signing the contract with GSL it was one disappointment after the next: Completely incompetent management, constant staff turnover, reception desk staff that were always \"in training\" - putting wedding guests on hold for extended periods of time, or hanging up on them when trying to make reservations. \r\rI had multiple phone conversations with the general manager prior to our wedding, but still he failed to deliver on what we discussed. His staff refused to bring out a second keg (which we ordered) to the patio during our cocktail hour, entree orders were wrong, entrees served were bland, cold and rock hard- so much so that guests complained to us! The open bar tab was displayed to guests on the cash register (unbelievably tacky, but didn't phase the staff at GSL). My expectations were low for a Northern MN lodge, but this place couldn't even serve warm food, the food that we actually ordered, or the booze we ordered. Oh and guests also complained when they tried to order food and drinks from the lodge restaurant/bar - rude staff, orders were wrong and over-priced. \r\rBrides, seriously don't waste your time at GSL or any of the Odyssey Resorts. Find a beautiful location along the North Shore, get married there, and then cater from a local vendor. Reviewed on 07-10-2014

We were told and received an e-mail confirmation from her that same month stating she had locked in the date for us, and would be in contact if anyone else requested the date. We e-mailed her again in August, ready to put down a deposit. She did not respond to the e-mail or following phone calls for 3 weeks!! When we finally did get a hold of her via e-mail (as she avoided speaking to us directly), she told us there had been some \"miscommunication\" regarding our date and she had booked the date for another couple. Although she extended the same offer for a different date and a 20% room discount, this did not change the fact that her avoidance of us would force us to take a date in October, by which time the leaves would be gone and snow might be a possibility. The manager was condescending and made us feel like we were lucky they were even extending us any offer during their busiest season. Do not trust a date hold there - put down a deposit ASAP!! Everyone raved about the food and the site could not have been more beautiful. Our family also loved that they could rent a large cabin and everyone could stay together for the whole weekend. The reason I don't give it a perfect review is because there were a few issues, First communication with the group sale coordinator was often difficult and we had to wait a couple days to get questions answered at first, that did improve the closer we got to the wedding. Second the front desk could not figure out our room blocks at all!! We ended up having to route all of our guests through the group sales coordinator because they kept telling people we were out of rooms or that only the more expensive rooms were available. And lastly during our reception the staff seemed to be un-managed in that there was no one I could go to address the little issues we had, like they kept taking nearly full bar drinks from tables and they wouldn't start a campfire at the right time. The accomodations were amazing though and they gave us a great deal. We really felt we had an amazing value for what it cost us. It helped that we had perfect weather, but even still I think everything would have been great. The lodges and lodge rooms were high quality, clean and comfortable. We rented 4 of the large lake homes for our parents, grandparents and the wedding party. It was great to have everyone so close, it made for a fun weekend. The location on the rocky shore of Lake Superior made for stunning photos and the nearby state parks kept our guests busy the whole weekend. The food was delicious and reasonably-priced and the waitstaff were friendly and accommodating. We had a couple things go wrong including our liquor order and miscommunication about when the reception hall would be ready for decorating - but everything worked out fine and the staff did their best to make up for anything that happened. Overall, our wedding at Grand Superior was perfect for us and we received so many compliments from our guests on the location, the lodge and the food. karen kuehn(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 18-09-2010 I LOVED Grand Superior Lodge! It was a gorgeous outdoor wedding! We didn't have anybody to help with rehearsal, so Courtney at the Lodge helped us, and did a wonderful job going over everything with us! She did a fabulous job of setting everything up for the rehearsal dinner outside, and even inside when it started to get chilly. It truly was a fairy tale wedding! :) Reviewed on 13-10-2010

Kelly Winders(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 29-08-2008 It was an amazing view of the North Shore. The backdrop was surreal for our pictures. It was beautiful. Also the food was really amazing!!!;We were charged $50 for a cake cutting fee when we didn't really know. We would have cut the cake for that. Also we were charged for the bar because we didn't get enough sales but the bar didn't have certain things so people were going upstairs to the restaurant bar for drinks and we would have met our quota. We were also charged for things another guest in the hotel was getting and didn't find out until later that they were wrongly charging us. Reviewed on 21-10-2008
