Henderson Castle Inn Wedding Ceremony - Reception Venue Reviews
Lindsey Vlietstra(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 19-10-2019 We got married on October 19 2019. We started planning about a year ago with a different coordinator who quit out of the blue. I will admit I was very worried after that until our tasting when we met Shannon. She is very personable and easy to work with. Francois, the owner also took time to speak with me and ease my nerves. On wedding day everything we needed was set up so I had no worries. In the package we got we had the venue, dinner, cake, violinist, a room for the night, breakfast the next day, and the DJ included. The only thing I had to book was the photographer. Ceremony went of perfectly along with the cocktail hour. Once we get to dinner is where I might give them 4.5 stars. The food was delicious. We had at least 3 guests I know of not get served their food and had to ask the servers for their plates. When it came to cake cutting time they served about half the guests and then disappeared. They also didnt ask me which flavor cake I wanted and served me my husband's choice instead of mine. I was stuffed by then so it wasnt a big deal but would've been nice to get served the flavor I choose in the cake. I also would've liked my steak a little more well done than it was but it was still very good. The bartenders were great especially Matt. He is an amazing people person and keeps everyone entertained. A lot of people left after dinner since it is a little bit of a climb to the ballroom but that was fine more room for us to dance. After everyone left we had a surprise in our room(which I wont say to ruin it for other couples) and we could've gone in the hottub on the roof but we were beat by then. Bed was comfy. The following day we went down for breakfast and the lady serving us was amazing. Some of the best eggs I have ever had. Overall I had an amazing experience and the castle is so gorgeous we were able to get some beautiful pictures. If there was a 4.5 button that would be my rating just because of the service issues. Getting that fixed would make it a solid 5 stars. I cant wait to try some of the other things like murder mystery dinner and haunted history tour in the future. Reviewed on 01-11-2019
Carolynn Zinsmaster(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-10-2021 Henderson Castle once seemed a dream venue for our wedding; however, we have discovered from experience and reviews that under the current ownership a wedding on their property would be a nightmare. In emails leading up to our wedding tour, there were several small miscommunications that were easy to look over. However, once we arrived to Henderson Castle on October 23rd for our scheduled wedding tour even the charm of the manager couldn't cover up the inadequacy of the owner. When we entered the castle, we noticed two gentlemen visibly upset about something. Neither greeted us and there was no one at the front counter (we later learned that one of the two gentlemen was the owner).Nevertheless, within about 5-10 minutes after our scheduled time the manager did come to greet us. There was initially some confusion thinking we had booked just a tour for a Bridal Party, but despite that initial confusion the manager did take us on the full wedding tour. However, one of the first things we were told was that they were in a situation because the owner believes he knows best about everything and does not listen to the experts in their areas. Yikes! No wonder it looked like the owner was having a hard time when we came in. But, we decided to overlook that as they were preparing for a Murder Mystery night and we have no idea what the severity of that \"situation\" was. Admittedly, the rest of the tour was nice. The manager is the one who guided the tour and he has an amazing personality. He really sold the place and I left really wanting to celebrate my wedding there. The rooftop has a gorgeous view, the bar area has a beautifully painted ceiling with lights embedded to mimic stars, the dining area looked wonderful. They were pricey for our wedding budget, but we wanted to work out a custom wedding package. After the tour, I was told the manager's assistant would get back to me shortly.Admittedly, I was still very excited about the venue and decided to email on October 27th, though I hadn't heard from them yet. In the email, I included our budget, stated the services we knew we would want, requested pricing on other services we weren't sure of, and included the information that my future in-laws would also pay for us to have the rehearsal dinner there. As of today (December 2nd) I have not heard back. I suppose we were lucky. It was only a couple days after sending that email that I found numerous negative reviews saying that the owner attempted to charge extra for services that were included in contracts, wrote fake reviews stating people had wonderful weddings at the Henderson Castle when the wedding was actually disastrous, and that the owner was entering people into a raffle to get a tv if they wrote a good review for Henderson Castle. There were several reviews that stated families had to get lawyers involved due to corrupt acts of the owner! And the amount of people that said the food was inadequate was alarming. When I told my future mother-in-law about this her friend even said she went to a wedding there recently and the food at the wedding was bad! Henderson Castle requires that you buy your food through them and there is a $3,500 food and beverage minimum for both the wedding dinner & rehearsal dinner...I wish the Henderson Castle had a different owner. But I can't risk my wedding being ruined by one man who doesn't listen to others and has ruined numerous weddings already. Reviewed on 02-12-2021
Sarah-Kate Henderson(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 15-06-2019 Our experience with Henderson Castle was wonderful. When searching for a venue, I knew I wanted a B&B to accommodate our guests and was pleasantly surprised that the packages are very reasonable and included most of the vendors we would need, which made everything so easy! We got married on June 15, 2019 and could not have been happier with the end result. While the changes/hiccups in staffing during our planning process made us a little nervous, it turns out we didn't need to be at all. The service from Henderson Castle was top-notch and the vendors were all amazing. Our wedding was beautiful and went off without a hitch, thanks to Shannon, who saved my sanity and made sure every detail was perfect. Our guests were absolutely charmed by the venue, the staff is lovely and the food is (actually) delicious! Would definitely recommend this venue for those looking for a unique, intimate and elegant wedding. Reviewed on 31-10-2019

Frauke Fierley-augst(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-09-2019 We and our guests had a magical time during our wedding weekend over Labor day. The venue was beautiful and clean, the rustic atmosphere was not to formal but just the right amount of elegance for the ceremony.Shannon was our wedding planner and organizer, she took over from 2 previous planners, which was a little frustrating, but she did a fantastic job making sure all the details were reviewed and considered and planned out. She was there to help with the decorations on Saturday and ensured everything on the day of the wedding was available and on time. She really thought about everything, which made the process much easier for us as we were from out of state and this was a destination wedding for us. Matt the bartender was fantastic. He was well prepared to serve and made our guest feel welcome and happy. Alexander, our \"butler\" for the day, was awesome. All our guest's love him. He was very attentive and helped in every way possible - He made us feel like royalty! The cost was in line for the services received and affordable enough so we could have the entire venue to ourselves from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning. There is a lot of flexibility in pricing depending on your budget. the number of guests and the services selected of course. Overall, if you are looking for a rustic and romantic setting Henderson Castle is a great destination. Reviewed on 31-10-2019

Ashley Oberholtzer(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-06-2019 We had an amazing experience at Henderson Castle. We were married there on June 1, 2019. The venue is beyond beautiful, the food was delicious, and the package truly well worth the value. In addition to providing amazing service, many of the packages offered by the castle provide vendor services such as DJ, photography, cake, etc., and the vendors they partner with are excellent. We did experience the same staffing shakeup during the planning of our wedding that has been mentioned in other reviews, and we ended up working with a different wedding coordinator than the one we started with. Though we were excited to work with our first coordinator we were totally happy and satisfied with the help planning and coordinating our wedding provided to us by Shannon Zilmer, who went above and beyond to make sure we felt confident that our wedding would go off successfully. She was fantastic during the planning and the day of the wedding and we couldn’t be happier with her. Additionally, during the transition the owner Francios Moyet was available by cell phone to help us through the planning process and provide us with excellent service. We couldn’t be happier with our wedding and without Henderson Castle and the vendors we were provided by the castle it would not have been as amazing as it was. Our wedding had about 75 guests and I think that was a good number for the venue, I can see maybe 115 people comfortably attending, it might be a bit crowded with more than that. We can’t wait to go back to Henderson Castle to take part in some of the events they put on or to celebrate anniversary’s etc. Reviewed on 19-07-2019
Lauren Rajewski(maid of honor)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 05-07-2019 I strongly urge you not to get involved with Henderson Castle. When my sister started to look at venues she met Cortnee, and we were all really excited to work with her. She has since left the business and we noticed a major shift in the experience and execution of the planning process almost immediately upon her departure. Examples of how they failed to deliver the dream wedding they sold include, but are not limited to: *\"Day of wedding coordinator\" - We had to hand hold every aspect of the planning and execution including ensuring the vendors and wedding were on schedule. Our \"wedding coordinator\" went as far as pulling a photographer to help light candles instead of taking pictures of the bride and groom during the ceremony. Due to lack of staffing, at one point the she was helping the bridesmaids serve the salads because they were never served. I had expected the coordinator to be organizing staff, helping to assist the bride and ensuring the event was on schedule, but in my opinion she did none of those things.* \"1 Bartender per 50 people\" -- we had 1 bartender for a 150+ wedding and the bartender appeared to me to be drunk*Alcohol Package -- We had 2 signature drinks. These were not premixed (as previously agreed) which meant that guests were waiting up to 40 min to receive a drink and at one point the bartenders were charging guests even though the alcohol was already paid for*\"All inclusive\" package -- Even though place settings are specifically called out as included in the contract, the venue tried to charge us for plate and cutlery rentals. We pushed back as it is clearly stated, and rather than rent plates, the wedding ran out of plates and dates ended up sharing plates. I assure you this is just a very small sampling of the nightmare that was planning and executing a wedding with this establishment. Rather than bore you with every disappointing aspect of this wedding, I will just recommend that if you have the option to get married in your parents backyard or at Henderson Castle, you go with your parents. sonia gonzales(guest)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 06-07-2019 I attended a wedding at the Henderson Castle this weekend. Unfortunately the venue did not have a backup plan for outdoor weddings so the entire wedding party and guests were exposed to the elements (pouring rain) throughout the ceremony. The facility was a physical hazard for anyone with mobility issues. Many loose bricks and no handicap parking. The dinner service was delayed and extremely understaffed ( one server for 150 guests) . At one point, the wedding party began serving salads and delivering bread baskets to expedite dinner. Dirty plates were never cleared and guests had to pile them up to make space for the next course. The dance floor was not an actual dance floor but laminate tiles glued together. It was unlevel and two guests tripped and fell as they were dancing. It is important for anyone considering this venue to read all reviews carefully. Reviewed on 11-07-2019
Jay Fettig(groomsman)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 05-07-2019 If you are looking at Henderson Castle as a wedding venue (or any event)…don’t. I have never in my life witnessed a more incompetent staff and dishonest owner than that at Henderson Castle. I won’t go into the planning of the event but it got so bad that our family had to engage a lawyer. As for the actual wedding weekend, here are a list of complaints:• Upon arrival, the lights in the bride’s wedding suite did not work• The Castle would not let us rent an additional tent to cover the guests during the ceremony in the event of rain (and it poured)• The “wedding coordinator’s” response to a request for an umbrella for the bride during the downpour was “we gave them all away, sorry”. • There was zero Henderson Castle staff helping wipe up the wet chairs for the ceremony, so the Ushers had to take the lead.• The bar at the wedding was not setup on time, the kegs were not put on ice until we requested it (and were foamy because of that), the “wait staff” set salads and salad dressing on the kegs while the bartenders told guest that those beers were not available• The bar was so understaffed the bride’s Uncle had to bartend• The serving staff was so understaffed that the bridesmaids and ushers had to serve salads (see picture)• Not all tables received dressings for salads from servers.• No tables received bread baskets, and the head table never received a bread basket throughout the entire reception• A request for sides on the reception tent was denied because they “had never needed sides before” and the head wedding table guests got soaked• The reception process was such a mess that the wedding coordinator started crying and a bridesmaid had to tell her to get it together before the bride saw• The bartender and DJ were drinking at the reception in the ballroom• Despite everything that happened and the Castle knowing they messed up big time, the owner did not show his face once on the day of the wedding or day after the wedding to apologize. He was onsite both days – there is no excuse.Henderson Castle should be ashamed of how the treated the wedding couple during the planning and should be ashamed of how they attempted to execute the wedding Reviewed on 10-07-2019

Outside weddings are held at the beautifully landscaped gazebo to give the perfect setting for the bride and groom, with a spectacular view of the vineyard as a backdrop.\rThe B&B has10 rooms and more under construction authentically decorated with antiques and character. \rHenderson Castle is also known for delicious food and fabulous presentation. Their executive chef, Francois, brings much experience to the catering “table”. The menus express French flavors from simple to elegant.\rFrom what I could see they have fantastic service. Experienced managers and banquet staff guarantee that your wedding and reception will be exactly as you have planned them to be. Friendly and accommodating receptionists welcome out of town guests as they check into a great night’s stay at the Castle. The combination of a boutique hotel, experienced and friendly staff, beautiful surroundings, and outstanding catering make Henderson Castle the ideal choice for a wedding. We rented the castle for 24 hours which I highly recommend doing. \r Henderson Castle provided the reception meal. I was able to order something not on their menu which was very helpful. Everyone said their food was amazing. The waiters were not great at asking people if they wanted soda or something besides alcohol so I had a couple of guests tell me they didn't know they could ask. I would recommend pointing that out but everyone had a great time. \r The cocktail hour was outside their new wine cave which was so great. That is a beautiful little spot that worked great. \r We had a small wedding (about 45 guests) so we were able to have the reception inside on the first floor. They don't have an elevator yet and we had some family that wouldn't have been able to use the stairs. \r Some family were able to spend the night since we rented the castle which was a lot of fun. Josh Gieszer(groom)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 20-09-2014 My wife and I were married at the Henderson Castle in September, 2014. We wanted an all-in-one venue for the ceremony, dinner, reception, and a place our out of town guests could stay the night. The castle offered all of these things, but we weren't sure what else to expect. I can honestly say now I can't imagine our wedding happening anyplace else. We're still getting compliments on the location over a month later!\r\rThe castle and grounds are beautiful - a really wonderful blend of old and new world charm. The place was MADE for pictures, especially the rooftop with the setting sun as a backdrop. \r\rThe food and cake were amazing. Honestly some of the best food my wife and I have ever had at a wedding. The staff even made a vegetarian recipe my wife provided for our guests. The cake was absolutely gorgeous and made exactly as we asked. We have some real foodie friends, and everyone was impressed!\r\rThe staff was perfect all night. We and our guests felt perfectly at home all evening, and were provided with anything we asked for. They helped us turn the 3rd floor reception space into a huge game room, and even went above and beyond to track down a pool table for our guests for the evening (if you stop by, ask Ashley about it - she's got a great story!). \r\rThe castle staff asked us to tell them our vision, then they made it happen. They were so flexible, even allowing us to change the location of our cake cutting and first dance to the center of the dining room on the fly to accommodate some of our guests that were going to have a hard time moving to a different location. They made every part of our day feel special and easy. \r\rWe had a wonderful breakfast the next morning with our friends that stayed the night, and even had a bit of leftover cake. It was a perfect way to spend some extra time with our friends from far away.\r\rWe didn't want to fuss with multiple vendors and locations for our wedding, but we thought we'd have to sacrifice the wedding we wanted to make it hassle free. However, I can truly say there isn't a single aspect that could have been improved upon. Plus my wife and I were completely free to focus on our day and guests while everything was taken care of. Everything was so much more than we had even imagined. I can't recommend the Henderson Castle highly enough. Reviewed on 26-10-2014

Everything was gorgeously decorated for the Christmas atmosphere and we didn't have to do much at all to add to it. The staff was also wonderful to work with and always answered all of our questions promptly. They also helped us out so much on the wedding day with set up. We had our ceremony inside on the beautiful staircase, and the staff was able to accommodate all of our 90 guests. Many people said it was one of the most beautiful ceremonies they had ever seen! \rWe then had a cocktail hour and the bartender (who was great and very knowledgeable/experienced) made a specialty candy cane martini just for our event. Guests were also free to look around the castle and loved seeing all of the different rooms and architecture. Dinner was amazing also! We had chicken, pork, or stuffed peppers with creamy tomato soup, rolls, and salad. The cake was custom designed by their pastry chef and made to look like a stack of Christmas gifts, everyone was very impressed and thought it was very unique.\rWe had the reception upstairs in the ballroom and it was really fun. The DJ that the castle provided was great and took requests and did games with the guests all night long. We also had a photo booth upstairs which the guests loved (provided by studio 616). At the end of the night, my bridesmaids and I went up into the rooftop hot tub with our wine which was a perfect end to the night. Many of our wedding party and family members went down into the \"man cave\" to enjoy some after party drinks with the bartender which was a great way to wind down after the party. \rWe rented out the castle for 24 hours so my wedding party and family all stayed the night in the castle. It was a great night and we had a true French breakfast in the morning which was delicious. \rI had such a great experience at the castle and it honestly exceeded my expectations. I planned this wedding from Virginia since my husband and I go to school there so I was a little worried about how things would turn out, but the staff was so great and knowledgeable that many guests said that it was the best wedding that they had ever been to. Alexandria Cichon(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-07-2013 My husband and I had our wedding at Henderson Castle in August 2013. The night turned out amazing. I cannot express how thankful I am to Francois, Jennifer and the staff at the castle. I have had many compliments on the location of our wedding and many people stated it was “the best wedding I’ve ever been to.” \r\rThe food was AMAZING, from the appetizers to the main course to dessert to breakfast the next morning. We opted for the bacon wrapped pork and chicken penne pasta dishes. I don’t think there was a single person who left food on their plates! They were also able to cater to both vegetarian and gluten free. As for dessert, we opted for a blueberry cheesecake which was to die for! We also had individual pastries for our guests. The French toast breakfast with rolls and fresh fruit in the morning were phenomenal also. Very filling and wonderful tasting.\r\rThe rooms at the castle were very clean and neat. It is definitely not a hotel. Each room has a specific theme and history. The walking tour in the castle allows to get the historical perspective of each room. \r\rThe view from the roof is breathtaking, as we took many of our wedding pictures up there. There is also a large stained glass in one of the stairways, which was beautiful in the pictures. I do wish the gardens were a little more in bloom, but I’m definitely not complaining here!\r\rIn terms of planning the wedding, I would expect that all venues have hiccups along the way. Francois and Jennifer worked with us every step of the way to get us what we wanted. The day of the wedding, we had an outdoor wedding and were able to get in a set up earlier than the usual check-in time, for which I was so grateful for. The dinner service could have used more staffing. I think if dinner was indoors, it would have been enough, but it took a while outdoors to get all of the plates served. \r\rAt the end of the night, I was a happy bride and would not have changed my venue for anything. \r Reviewed on 05-10-2013

It was a beautiful summer day in June, 2013, as we drove up the winding driveway and up the steep hill to the Henderson Castle in Kalamazoo, MI; we were in awe of this great establishment built in 1895. The Henderson Castle has so many things to offer such as a very interesting historical background, many updates and amenities, a breathtaking view of the city from a roof top Jacuzzi, and five star dining.\r \rWe entered the castle and were immediately greeted by the staff, shown to our room which was Mr. Henderson’s personal suite. We were given a brief history of the room by a courteous and friendly staff member and she even gave us hot tea and biscuits, which were delicious. There are so many unique rooms to choose from at The Henderson Castle, and each room has its own uniqueness, theme, and history. The rooms are affordable, clean, and have all the amenities that you need in order to be comfortable during your stay and The Henderson Castle staff is friendly, courteous, and professional. \r\rAfter dinner, we sat at a small cafe table on the porch, just the two of us, enjoying our cocktail prepared in the Henderson Castle’s own bar that’s tucked away in a little room. We reflected on a perfectly prepared 5 Course dinner by Chef Francois Moyet, Owner, and how our waiter played violin for us beautifully during dinner. \r\rWe couldn’t help but wonder what it must have been like to purchase this castle like Francois did, with a goal in mind for a Bed & Breakfast. Suddenly, it all became so clear to us. Francois was “allowing” his guests to be part of his dream. At that moment, we decided not to leave the castle for sight-seeing in the city and we immediately booked a tour of the castle for the next day after we ate a delicious breakfast prepared by Francois. As the day went on, Francois gave a group of people a tour of the castle and we got to see the beautiful garden where fresh vegetables are grown that are used on The Henderson Castle menu. \r\rWhen you choose to stay at The Henderson Castle, you’re not getting a predictable experience… you’re getting a once on a life time experience. We hope to come back again soon to spend time together and learn even more about this national historical landmark, that’s right here in Michigan!\r\rThank you to Francois, and his dedicated staff, for making our 2 day getaway seem like we travelled the world, to explore a hidden gem that was just 4 hours from our front door.\r\rRespectfully yours, \rAngie Smiley and Bob Kerrigan\rBurtchville, MI\r Reviewed on 01-10-2013
