The Historic Rice Mill is THE perfect wedding venue in Charleston. The venue breathtaking, it's right on the water with indoor and outdoor options. We had the best experience working with Kate and her team. I'm not kidding when I say everything was perfect & as stress free as a wedding can be! Not only is the space incredible, but the team is so accommodating and helpful - they went out of their way to make sure our day was everything we wanted. Deb Starr(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 17-09-2022 I had a beautiful September wedding at the Rice Mill. I cannot thank Tristan and the team at Holy City Hospitality enough for the venue and services for my wedding. I was impressed with all of the time and effort Tristan (day of coordinator) invested in helping us coordinate every moment of the event and coordinate with the vendors. This was particularly helpful because everyone at the wedding (including myself) were not local to the area. Tristan and the team provided us recommendations and assistance throughout the entire wedding planning process. Our rehearsal dinner was held at Virginia on Kings (another restaurant part of the Holy City Hospitality Group), the food was great (no one left hungry). It was helpful and efficient planning both events with the same Hospitality Team. The venue was beautiful and a perfect size for our wedding of approx. 80 people. The wedding ceremony and reception was executed exactly as planned. The food and drinks were impressive and tasty. As a Type A bride, it felt great being able to rely on a coordinator and team I trusted to make my day perfect. Michelle Ford(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-08-2022 I cannot say enough amazing things about Kate and the Rice Mill. Kate was available at anytime leading up to wedding and was there to make the process as stress free as possible. She allowed us to be honest during our tasting without feeling guilty- which made for the best food that our guests STILL talk about. The Rice Mill offers Good Food Catering as their vender and WOW. The apps, dinner stations, desserts were outstanding and the staff were extremely professional. However, there were some negatives- mainly with the bar staff. We had 2 bartenders for around 130 guests and it was one of the bartender's first night ever bartending. They ran out of cold beer and glasses for drinks with 2 hours left. We had a bourbon bar outside that was only open for an hour. They didn't prep the bar at all with cups or ice and the groom's father had to bartend it for the first 20 minutes. BUT with that being said, we wouldn't have chosen a different venue or catering company! Reviewed on 06-12-2022

We also highly recommend using Tristan as the Day of Coordinator because she helped make the planning process and day of go perfectly without any hiccups! During the planning process, she always quickly responded to emails, answered all our questions, and prompted us by asking the right questions. On our wedding day, Tristan very meticulously laid out our personal items at the wedding, then after she repacked them back into our bins exactly as she had received them from us. Her attention to detail is great. Our guests complemented on the beauty of the venue and the food was all DELICIOUS! Our favorites were the mac and cheese station, pan seared grouper station, and she crab soup shot appetizer. GFC was very accommodating by making us late night snack Chicago style hot dogs. Also, the sunset over the Ashley River is BEAUTIFUL! The Rice Mill is great because it has separate rooms which allowed guests to spread out and/or be outside (especially with COVID). Shayna Reichert(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 21-07-2019 We went to visit the HRM on a scouting trip to Charleston for our destination wedding. With an off season wedding, it was by far the most affordable venue but wasn't my favorite online as it was difficult to get my head around their layout. As soon as we got there and we walked in to see the harbor through EVERY window in the venue, we fell in love. After we met with Eve and toured it, we were sold. We hired Eve to serve as our day-of coordinator and she absolutely KILLED it. I have a big family that can need a lot of direction and she did it effortlessly. She responded to all of my questions promptly and helped us manage our budget so we could spend in areas that were most important to us and save in other spots. Eve showed up with our favorite drinks and apps as soon as the ceremony ended- she put our needs first all day, which is exactly what you want on your special day. The Southern hospitality was REAL here! All of our pictures off of the docks and in front of the building were beautiful. You do need a professional day of coordinator to book here. I loved that they let us use actual candles (with covers) through out. I would advise using all of their recommendations for vendors- they really know what they're doing! I did deviate to work with some vendors I liked and they did a great job communicating with them. We got into town a few days early and were able to drop off our decorations early (we didn't have many, we mostly did flowers). We took advantage of their Friday/Sunday discount and the off season discounts in July that some venues offer. We did the ceremony outside at 7 pm- it was hot but not unbearable and there was nice breeze off the water. The AC was super helpful inside for the rest of the party! I would definitely recommend this venue (and Eve!) if you're looking for a beautiful waterfront venue that has all the charm and hospitality you would want from a southern venue. However, I have to say that my family and I were quite surprised by a few things during our experience.First of all, I am saddened to say that the biggest negative I faced throughout my entire wedding planning process was the struggle I had attempting to work with Jenna. Perhaps the largest example to describe my disappointment: I hired her and confirmed her as a day-of coordinator (which was a change they instituted during my time between booking and wedding), and Jenna completely forgot I had even hired her. At that point, I was forced to find another day-of coordinator (which turned out to be a fabulous alternative!) - I couldn't entrust that job to someone who didn't even document I had hired her. She was far less than professional throughout the process, even less so after the coordinator conundrum. I have to say, I am truly shocked that there have been so many positive reviews about her services. She certainly does not represent the Rice Mill in a positive way.Additional things to be aware of: there is no bridal suite at the Rice Mill. I couldn't ride in the car in my wedding dress, so I had to put my dress on at the Rice Mill. This occurred behind a screen, in the corridor to the kitchen area. My bridesmaids had to shield me. Needless to say, this wasn't ideal. Initially, I was told we could hang out and get dressed in Jenna's office on the wedding day, but Jenna did not follow up on this. Moreover, the innate loveliness of the Rice Mill made up for lack of professionalism. Just want to make people aware! Reviewed on 09-05-2017
Katie Townsend(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 17-12-2016 The Historic Rice Mill is a beautiful venue and it is right on the water. They really worked with us on price after we turned to them when the Citadel Beach Club caught fire. All linens, chairs, and lighting contractors were done through them and they set everything up. The food was delicious and they provide dishes. I had about 185 people with about 85 seats. I had a day wedding and had stations and hors d'oeuvres so not everyone needed to be sitting. Didn't need to get cocktail tables because the ones they have were great and very historical looking. They also provided tables. They had 2 patio areas and one had outdoor seats. There was also plenty of room for dancing. Reviewed on 25-02-2017

We are so thankful for Eve's guidance through food (our guests can't stop talking about how good it was) and rentals- and even with questions the day before the wedding. Seriously the BEST food, smooth coordination and flow of our day, and great (fast) communication throughout the planning process. Eve made planning from out of town so easy. We held both our ceremony and reception on site, and we could not have asked for a more picturesque setting for both. The exposed brick, large windows and beautiful views were enough to sell us, but our wedding day (and all of the planning) were that much better when we met the amazing staff! We were lucky enough to work with Eve, who literally managed EVERYTHING - from the rentals and food to deliveries and day-of coordination. Eve met with us on several occasions to make sure everything was planned exactly as we wanted, she came through the day of when I forgot to drop-off important items, and she made it her mission to ensure that all of our guests were having a wonderful time on the night of our wedding. She was genuinely interested in making our night one that we would never forget, and we can't thank her and the HRC/GFC staff enough for all of their hard work! Reviewed on 01-11-2016
Caroline Teagle(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 15-10-2016 I had a good feeling about the Rice Mill before our venue tours even kicked off, so it felt totally right when they emerged as the obvious frontrunner. We were working with a relatively modest budget and without question Rice Mill had far more to offer in terms of beauty and wow-factor than other venues in the same price range. Jenna and her team were fantastic to work with and all their help and guidance throughout the process was invaluable. The event itself went off without a hitch just a week after Hurricane Matthew. The Rice Mill Staff and Good Food Catering (their in house catering company) took such care to make it a beautiful event. Strongly recommended! Reviewed on 28-10-2016

The food was wonderful - The service by Jenna (our coordinator), which included a poor and unprofessional attitude, was not. We were told setup was included on the contract (and had discussions about personal table runners and table number placement) until the day prior to the wedding, in which we were told certain items would not be placed. Her reply was something to the effect of \"everyone knows caterers don't do that.\" I've never been married before and wasn't aware of typical expectations and relied on vendors for specific guidance. I was also confused because the contract stated they do all setup and because we had specific conversations about personal items that she said would be setup. We only had table runners, numbers and favors. I had to ask extended family to run over the morning of the wedding to take care of that. Then the caterers took our bakery items at the end of the reception and bottles of alcohol, which we purchased ourselves and provided. My mom had told Jenna she was going to grab bags to pack up the remainder of cookies (we had out as snacks), to find that they were gone 5 minutes later when she went back with the bags. Nobody claimed they knew where the cookies went. They also didn't serve both flavors of cake, or ensure that there was cake available at all times. We had many guests who didn't get a slice. They also threw out our favors that were on the tables while our guests were dancing. We personally bagged pralines with tags for our guests - not to have them thrown out!\rI realize not everything goes perfectly, and we expected a minor issue or two to pop up, most of which our guests I'm sure wouldn't realize, but what really stung was her attitude after we addressed our concerns. She disputed every detail and even went so far as to say the florist was talking poorly about me, which A) was completely unrelated and unnecessary and B) was completely surprising - we loved the florist and felt the whole process was easy with the florist! \rThere were no apologies, just disputes and attitudes. With that said, the food was great - compliments to the chef! \rI recommended if you go with them to ask for someone other than Jenna as a coordinator. \r Reviewed on 21-01-2016
Arden Ratliff(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 12-12-2015 When you book the Rice Mill, I believe you must use Good Food. It was easier for us at least, so we did and boy was it amazing! Note that the price I listed is also for full bar service for about 160 people. As for the food, it was some of the best food I've had a wedding. They have a full kitchen onsite so everything was hot and delicious. We had passed apps during cocktail hour of lobster mac & cheese, baby lamp chops & bacon wrapped shrimp and scallops. We then had two stations, one a full Italian station with chicken, shrimp, and 3 sauces and the second was a pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and asparagus. YUM! It was soooo good and Eve at the Historic Rice Mill is so easy to work with. Highly recommend this company for one of your biggest wedding expenses. Reviewed on 29-12-2015
Meredith Reiter(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-11-2015 The Rice Mill was the perfect venue for us, complete with a rustic look (exposed brick and tin ceilings) and a view of the marina, which made for the best sunset photos. Because the venue is so pretty, we didn't have to spend as much on decorations. Also, Eve was so helpful and patient with us through countless emails and phone calls to select food and set up a floor plan. Food must be catered through the venue, which made me nervous at first to limit our options, but it turned out to be really helpful to work through one vendor. (They also handled the chair and linen rentals for us too.) We heard so many compliments on the food and the crepes were so good that we skipped a cake and served a few flavors of crepes for dessert instead.\rOverall, if this venue is in your price range, I would highly recommend it for it's beauty and the ease of working with their staff. The only downfall is that you can't safely walk from the venue to any of the hotels that are nearby so we hired shuttles for our guests. Reviewed on 13-12-2015

HRM has a lot of charm because it is an old building but, if you are particular about the flow of the room, this would not be the place for you. It is an old building so it is more broken out. It didn't mess anything up for us though. Once this place was decorated and with the big windows with all the boats out back was beautiful. \r\rI love having our ceremony on the back dock. It was a very hot day but, the breeze saved our guests. I thought it was very picturesque with the boats right behind us during the ceremony. Very nice to have the ceremony on the back too as it was more secluded and quiet. It was great to have the back docks to for pictures as it is a very great area for pictures and they turned out awesome. Great to have this access right there!\r\rThey did have tables we could use which was nice not to have rent those but, everything else will have to be rented (chairs, linens, tableware etc.). \r\rI did think Jenna could have been more helpful in the process - she seemed very short with us whenever we spoke with her on the phone. I guess I expected more from the management staff as we are their customers and we are PAYING for them but, everything got done and there were no issues so I guess I can't complain. I suppose I just expected more.\r\rHowever, food was great, wait staff was great and the venue was very pretty once all decorated and set up. I loved the venue and the chef is awesome! We booked the venue over a year in advance and were talking with them months before that. So with that said, some things changed from our first conversations through the time of the event and that is the reason I have to take away a star. We thought some things would be included with the venue that we ended up having to pay for that wasn't budgeted out. However, with that said, the venue was a dream. It was everything I wanted - a historic building, right on the water, very Charleston. The layout was great especially if you aren't into the one big room thing like me. Guests get to flow throughout the building space (indoor and outdoor) with the dance floor on one side and most seating tables on the other. It worked perfectly for our reception and we got so many compliments on the venue. It is a beautiful building with great scenery, so it doesn't need much decoration. We loved the ambiance, and overall feel to the building. There are so many options and ways you can decorate and utilize this site. WE loved that you could have the dancing and music near the bar and have inside and outside places for people to talk and mingle. The food was amazing and our guests were not afraid to share that with us. The servers treated my husband and myself like royalty. They made us plates of food and brought us drinks throughout the night. The air conditioning was kicking for our august wedding and you wouldn’t have even known it was summer outside. It did rain on our big day but that didn’t hinder the photo opportunities or our guests from enjoying the outside covered area to eat and mingle. The Rice Mill is beautiful in photographs either as a back drop or just candid shots. It is pricey, but worth the money!! The only problems we had was our Rice Mill host left during the process so we had to transition to a new person, but it didn’t take her long to catch up to us and our planning. You cannot have a more perfect background for your photos than the beautiful harbor and boats on the outside, and the inside with it's exposed brick walls, wide planked wood floors, and beautiful tin ceiling. You do not need much decoration to made this place look exquisite...just some candles did the trick for us! I cannot stress enough the beauty here!\r\rThe experience of planning and having our wedding here was also equally as wonderful. The staff were very thorough and helpful, and great to work with. The only glitch was that our rehearsal that was supposed to be there the evening before our wedding was not able to happen due to another event being planned...and we did not get this information until 4:30 the day of the rehearsal. That was easily rearranged on our part, but was an inconvenience. \r\rI would recommend this venue to anyone. Beautiful, pretty affordable, and easy to \"glam up\" for a wedding without having to spend much money, and the food was AMAZING! Good Food Catering is the catering company that works at the venue, and I have gotten an overwhelming amount of praise for the food.
