Mayowood Stone Barn Reviews
Alex Cloutier(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 26-09-2015 We just had our wedding at the Mayowood Stone Barn and I have to say I am so amazed by this venue!! Everything about it is so beautiful! I heard endless comments from guests about how gorgeous and unique the barn is. One of my favorite parts is that you get the whole property to yourself for the day so you don't need to worry about other weddings on-site and you can spend your whole day there -- we used the bridle suite for the bridal party to get ready, the groomsmen used the game room to hangout in all morning, we used the blacksmith shop for cocktail hour, had our ceremony in the loft, and our reception in the barn... not to mention there's a fire pit for s'mores -- AMAZING!\r\rOne thing to note is that Saturday and Sunday weddings cannot set-up before the day-of as the barn usually has weddings Friday-Sunday so I would highly recommend a day-of wedding coordinator for this venue. We had one and I can't imagine the day without her!!\r\rI would highly recommend this venue in a heartbeat... It is a truly breathtaking space. \r\r Reviewed on 30-09-2015

My husband and I just had our wedding at this venue in October of 2023. Melissa and the team that I worked with with mayowood had great communication and everything was made simple and easy. Our guests absolutely loved the venue as did we. Very elegant and classy. Unfortunately due to the weather we couldnt use the outdoor ceremony space, but we made the upstairs work and it still looked great! Reviewed on 16-10-2023

Mayowood Stone Barn staff was very professional and helped to make my wedding day magical! I had to plan my wedding from out of state and they made the process super easy. They offer a ton of options to streamline your day and make it your own. The indoor and outdoor ceremony options and the mix of indoor/outdoor locations during the cocktail hour and reception are amazing. All of my guests said it was the most beautiful location and super easy to travel to. I highly recommend having your wedding here!!! My day was unforgettable!!!! Reviewed on 21-06-2023

Rebecca Sladich(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 19-02-2022 This venue was absolutely magical for our wedding. With our wedding being in the winter, it was wonderful to have both the ceremony and reception in the same building, so our family members didn't have to brave the midwest winter! Emma was so great to work with, and was there every step of the way with me (and extremely patient!) Been known to not pay contractors, and are red flagged by over half the contractors in Rochester for non-payment. Don't take care of landscape, with the 305 year old having been dead for at least two years, the second biggest has died, and now the one they use is maybe 80 years old. Cool spot, but I couldn't support a business that just allows the area to fall apart and continue to sell weddings there. Like I said, there are multiple businesses taking them to court over non-payment. Don't support these assholes and be a bit more original and go somewhere else. Reviewed on 27-09-2021

I am a covid bride and even with all of that craziness the people at the Mayowood Stone Barn communicated and worked with us to make our wedding perfect. I remember calling Melissa worried about guest lists getting cut and her first words were “how are you holding up in this” she cared about me as a stressed out person, not just a customer. Melissa and Emma and all the other staff we worked with were always there for us and so amazing! Plus the venue itself, beautiful! Total wow factor! Perfect accommodations, even for my winter wedding! Breathtaking! And the food! Jesse was a dream to work with. We had a tasting and that is a big accomplishment because I lived 2 hours away and my now husband lived in Kentucky. He was patient and worked with us to get our menu to be exactly what we wanted. And on the day of he made sure service was perfect and that we ate too. And we are so happy we did because it was delicious! We had vegans, dairy and gluten allergies mixed in our guest list... not a problem-everyone had an amazing meal. Our guests were wowed!! I can’t say enough things about how positive our experience was here. The beautiful venue and amazing service really speaks for itself. Book a tour- see it for yourself! It’s a perfect choice!! Sami Heeren(bride)3 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 23-10-2020 The venue is beautiful and our wedding went off without a hitch, but there were a couple things we were disappointed with.1. When we went to tour this venue we asked about the price on three separate occasions during our tour and were told it was $3,000. We were thrilled. We went immediately from our tour and signed a contract for $3,000. The next day we received an email stating they were going to charge us $4,500 as the person who toured us had given us the incorrect information. We reached out with numerous calls and emails to try to negotiate as we had already signed a legally binding contract for $3,000. They didn’t work with us at all and went ahead and charged us the $4500 without our consent, and never sent us our original contract.2. After spending an additional $1500 for the venue. They didn’t let us use the grooms room as it was “too expensive to heat”. So we were forced to pay more for the venue and we didn’t even get to use the whole venue. They put the groomsmen in the blacksmith shop and it wasn’t that warm. The men were forced to change in blacksmith shop, and there were no coverings for the windows. These are just things to keep in mind if you are planning on getting married during the colder months. Jessica Brown(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 05-08-2018 People kept asking why I was getting married in Rochester. The only reason was the venue. This is by far the prettiest venue I have ever seen, and that's not even the best part. Mayowood has incredible people who are experienced and ready to make your bug day exactly what you've always dreamed it was. Once you start with the venue. I highly recommend asking and using the vendors the suggest. That's what I did and all the way up to the wedding I knew I had people who were going to help and answer all of my pesky questions. Ann Benner(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-07-2018 We just got married at mayowood stone barn last weekend and could not recommend it more. Melissa was extremely helpful and always so quick to respond. We worked with Adam for catering and he was incredible as well. Both went above and beyond to make the day perfect. Melissa let us come out 3 more times after the tour to calm my OCD about decor. Some family members made comments about the location (we are from the cities) but that was something we loved the whole time because only people who really wanted to be there came. In the end everyone loved that we got a getaway. We got the free trolley through the doubletree and went downtown with our friends after our rehearsal dinner and wedding and everyone had a blast in Rochester! The price of the barn compared to others in the city is incredible and the price we paid for a served dinner with passed apps and an open bar was nearly half of the city prices. We didn’t necessarily want a barn but did want an outdoor ceremony and a garden style wedding. Unlike other barns it was so easy to transform the barn into whatever you wanted being it does have a more fancy European vibe but also can be rustic. The day of the renovations made the barn more beautiful than we had ever seen before and guests were so stunned by the beauty of the venue! The property was perfect for us as we wanted a fancier wedding but loved that we could still be outdoors. Hearing so many people complain about things at their venue makes me so happy we went with Mayowood. They not only met our expectations but exceeded them and I would recommend the barn to anyone!!! We thankfully were already using Power Ventures for our catering, as they had the best reviews. They had mentioned this had been an issue for a few, but honestly, their food was IMPECCABLE! Our guests were amazed and I will recommend them over and over again for catering, even not this venue. Chad with Canadian Honkers & Power Ventures was amazing to work with and he answered every single question I had, he was easy to contact and I always knew he would respond, even if it wasn't a question that directly pertained to him and the catering. We used Top Tier for our cake and they were phenomenal, also super easy to work with and contact. They are also a part of the Power Ventures, but I am not sure if you are required to use them. Kirsten Mueller(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 08-10-2016 I grew up in Rochester and always knew I wanted to get married at the Stone Barn. My husband and I got engaged July of 2015 and starting looking at venues immediately after, and all of the Saturdays for 2016 were already booked. Luckily, someone cancelled their event and the couple on the waitlist before us also turned down the date, so we were able to have a Saturday wedding. All of our guests were amazed with how beautiful the venue was. It also has a great history behind it. My only complaint was that it was not easy communicating with the staff at the barn. Had I not wanted to get married here since I was little, I would have been hesitant about choosing this venue due to their lack of communication. They did go through a staff change between our booking and wedding, and we did notice some improvement afterwards, although it was still somtimes difficult to reach them via phone. Leah Bergquist(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 22-07-2016 Overall, the barn is amazing. It is absolutely beautiful. They were a bit to work with as half way through my contract they switched owners and the transition was a bit stressful. The new owners (power ventures) are really amazing though. They really did everything they could to try and make the transition smooth and to help the best they could. I will say though, do not shy away now that Power Ventures requires you to go through their catering service Canadian Honker. Their food was absolutely amazing! I mean it was the best wedding food I have ever had! My family and friends are still talking about how amazing it was and my wedding was a month ago! Overall, I am very happy I decided to go with the barn. The new staff is amazing and they really try to make your day special. The catering staff really out did themselves as the service was amazing. My only comment is make sure they know what to do with the cake if you go through someone different. We got a small two tiered cake for us and our wedding party and after we did the cake cutting the rest never got cut or served to our wedding party. It was unfortunate, because since it was so hot out (110 F) we had to throw it away at the end of the night. It was just a miscommunication that could have been easily fixed. Reviewed on 17-08-2016
Alanna Nieman(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 13-08-2016 This is a great wedding venue. We chose it for its beauty, size, and flexibility. We wanted to bring our own meat and beer, and this venue allowed us to choose any caterer we want. In January the Stone Barn was bought by Powers Ventures, who now require you to use them as your caterer, but it just so happens that that's the caterer we had chosen. They are also very flexible and great at what they do. I got a bit worried when my contact at the Stone Barn left and was replaced by someone else a few months before the wedding, but Melissa (the new person) was wonderful! Melissa was available the whole time we were setting up and was very helpful in answering our questions and making sure things were set up where they needed to be. We got so many compliments on the venue. Leigha Curfman(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 12-09-2015 Venue itself 5 stars. Stunning, perfect vintage, rustic elegant, simply beautiful venue. \rProblem is the people running it. Email response terrible, nearly impossible to communicate any updates, changes, layouts, or ask any questions. I don't think anybody is really in charge or knows what's going on there. There is different, new people coming and going.\r\rMoney pit! The cost what you initially see, is nothing close to final cost. There are so many hidden fees and payments that come out of nowhere and are not in the contract you sign. One of them being venue insurance, which we were informed about one month before the wedding. We had to ourselves purchase a 2 million insurance policy for a fairly small wedding, and were required to list them as the beneficiary. \r\rThey provide tables and chairs, be prepared to hire out everything else from dance floor to table linens. Also their sound system is terrible. \r\rThere is no upkeep, and no one taking care of the grounds. There are lots of weeds around the barn, and the bridal room does not get cleaned between use. \rThe flooring in the barn is not safe!! Very unsteady, uneven, missing pieces. \rI understand it's rustic, but there are ways to preserve it and keep the beauty in it without tripping and potentially injuring yourself while walking. It's a beautiful place, but in 5 years I don't think it will be in good shape with the lack of care that I saw. \r\rSomebody is sitting on an awful lot of money and putting very little back into the barn. \r\rTheir was nobody available the day of, I think I saw somebody go up to an office above the bridle room..but she definitely didn't want to be bothered. Not once did she pop in to say hi or offer anything. \rBe prepared to fully do absolutely everything yourself, pay a ton, and expect hidden fees. \r\rAlso luckily we had absolutely perfect weather on our wedding day. If you need heat or A/C I think that could be a big problem to have to deal with. I'm sure it wouldn't get set up if it even works, and you would be paying again more money for it. \r\rI feel very lucky that I had a set up crew, family help, and worked with vendors that we're familiar with the barn. \r\rDo not expect anything from them but headaches, frustration, and more money, more money, more money! If you can get over that it's still a very beautiful venue to get married at. \r Reviewed on 04-10-2015

Fortunately no one was hurt becuase the doors way almost 500 lbs a piece. The door caused several $1000's damage to my car.\r\rThe owner asked that I not file it with my insurance, that he would cover it personally. This should have been a red flag for me.\r\rFlash forward 4 months, almost 5, and all of the damages have not been covered. I have called the owner many, many times and I have NEVER had a call returned. Morgan Converse(bride)3 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-09-2014 The land and barns are absolutely stunning, I knew I couldn't be married anywhere else. This was the only place we really fell in love with, and our wedding day was stunning.\r\rThe issues I had with this venue was defiantly communication! We booked mayowood 2 years prior to our wedding date -- I contacted them a year and a half out asking some questions about various idea's we had. And they had said they didn't have a date held for us. Apparently they sent out a mass email to all pending couples saying now was the time to book, WE NEVER RECEIVED this email, they didn't call or any other attempt than this email that was sent. SO they gave our date to someone else, with NO notice! \r\rThis was devastating! Our date was our anniversary, our family and friends are 2,000 miles apart it was important for them to know the date ahead of time, for them to plan ahead of time. We took the day after our original date which was a Sunday, it was still beautiful and it did all work out, however we had maybe 50 people that couldn't attend because of the Sunday wedding. By the time I had contacted them and found out the bad news of loosing our date all the weekends were booked up, it was my only option unless we waited another year. \r\rOur contact that had this issues changed the day after we found out we had lost our date. I never had a call from the manager until the day before our wedding, emails were very few, and changes had to be made days before our wedding for their legal contracts.\r\rThey didn't help us set up, or tear down. I only saw the on site coordinator once that day. We were also annoyed with the fact that we had paid over 4 grand for this venue and you have to be prepared that you don't get the venue until the day of your wedding unless you book both days. We got the venue at 8 am the day of our wedding and there were people out there taking photos, and senior photos while we were setting up. Random people would pull up into the area and gawk around. This was incredibly rude, we paid for this venue we should of had it to ourselves! \r\rThe good and the bad -- The day WAS beautiful, this venue is one of a kind, it is stunning, simple, and elegant. You don't have to do a lot to it, it's simply beautiful. Our guests can't stop talking about this venue, and how much fun they have. I wouldn't have gotten married anywhere else, it was perfect. \r\rJust be prepared to do it all on your own, and to go with whatever is thrown at you. In the time we booked the venue as to now it's gone up 2 grand, I don't see how it can be worth that much when you have no one there to hep you! Reviewed on 06-11-2014
Melanie Ellsworth(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 10-10-2014 The Mayowood Stone Barn, it's a pricey option, but it comes ready to go. Although we added quite a few personal touches for our day, it honestly doesn't need any extra decorations or even a florist to make this space perfect for your wedding day. Numerous times I heard how much like a \"fairy-tale\" it felt to people, and that's what we were going for. \r\rThe staff at the Stone Barn, albeit hard to reach most times and seemingly unorganized until last minute, (constant staff changes. Our contacts changed about 3 times over our 2 year engagement) they were accommodating and gracious and helped pull things together on the day of. Our day-of contact, though MIA for most of the day was there from morning until we left after midnight and even helped us do tear-down. We loved this venue and were incredibly pleased with most everything. \r\rOur negatives, besides the difficult time staying in contact, would basically be that they will try to squeeze every last penny out of you. We were told last minute that if we wanted the barn heated it would be an extra $300, and we needed to provide our own propane for the outdoor heaters and firewood for the campfire, and although I paid the extra $250 for full use of the furniture barn I found out the day-of that use of the really beautiful antique furniture was an additional $100 on top of that.\r\rOverall, despite the insanely high cost, it was and is a fantastic venue for an unforgettable celebration. If we can ever afford another party like our wedding, you can bet we'll make the Stone Barn our venue. Reviewed on 27-10-2014

After acknowledgement from several people at MSB that we were due a full refund, we are here 6+ months later still waiting for our refund of $2,000. Calls and emails are no longer answered. They blew off the Better Business Bureau and their rating now stands at an “F” (see link below). They have also failed to respond to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office. Unbelievable!! I am sure by the many positive reviews that this is a beautiful venue for a wedding if you jump through all of their hoops and there are no issues, but if there are issues … BUYER BEWARE… you may find our real fast like I did, how unbelievably unprofessional these folks can become. Do your due diligence and best of luck.\r\rhttp://www.bbb.org/minnesota/business-reviews/wedding-chapels-and-ceremonies/cpdc-mayowood-stone-barn-in-rochester-mn-96385752 Reviewed on 21-10-2014
CoryAnn Debronsky(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-06-2014 We heard mixed reviews about Mayowood's communication, and that they were difficult to get a hold of. Overall, we were able to communicate everything that needed to be said, though we did experience a few days of waiting to hear back at times; sometimes even needing to repeat our emails. In general we loved this venue, and so did all of our guests. Rain or shine, this place is a beautiful location. They staff are very accommodating to your needs. If I had to do it again I would choose this place! Reviewed on 19-06-2014

chelsea clark(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 23-08-2013 We had the BEST experience at the Mayowood. From the very beginning, Shelly and Homer were warm and welcoming, and oh-so-helpful. We booked a Friday at this stunning venue, so we had our rehearsal dinner there on Thursday. We really wanted to have a 'wedding party kickball' game, but weren't sure if the owner's would go for it...Shelly thought it was awesome and helped us pick the best spot to play!\r\rI can't stress how helpful Shelly was. She was on our-site coordinator and worked so hard make sure everything went smoothly. We had literally zero worries the entire day, but we may have if we didn't have Shelly handling everything!\r\rThe venue itself, as I said, is absolutely stunning. We had so many compliments on our choice of venue. Everything - the barn, the land, the tree swing, the bridle suite, the blacksmith's lounge comes together just right for the perfect rustic wedding location.\r\rSo happy with our decision to get married at the Mayowood - it was a PERFECT day and we couldn't have asked for anything better. Thank you, Shelly and Homer! Reviewed on 18-09-2013
Ellen Hudson(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 13-07-2013 My husband and I got married at the Mayowood Stone Barn in July of 2013. We could not have asked for a better, more magical or beautiful place to tie the knot! Most of our friends and family were from the Twin Cities and we were concerned at first about asking them all to drive to Rochester. In the end - all were raving about our venue and what a good time they had there. It was totally worth the drive!! Shelly and Homer are the sweetest, most genuine and helpful couple and we loved working with them. They've had to jump through hoops placed on the barn by the Rochester City Council, and have handled all of the changes gracefully. My husband and I wanted a memorable, unique wedding that was classy and comfortable, in a barn with character. We got all of that and more, and wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Best day of our lives, thanks to the Mayowood Stone Barn! Reviewed on 06-08-2013
Samantha Enright(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 17-05-2013 The Stone Barn is beautiful! We had a late spring wedding, which unfortunately for Minnesota has it's risks. Due to late snow fall, most of trees did not yet have leaves, and it rained on our day- which is a bummer, considering how much you pay for the entire land and are then stuck inside. The loft is gorgeous though, and not at all a bad second option for the ceremony. Everyone we came into contact with was extremely helpful and communicative through the entire process. The day ran so smoothly! Reviewed on 23-07-2013
Heather Patch(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 12-05-2013 Simply beautiful! Filled with natural beauty! Not much needs to be done here to have the perfect rustic wedding. \rYou just need to be aware that there are no staff on during your special day. You are allowed to pick your own vendors (not from a list), but having a coordinator helps the flow at this location! Reviewed on 18-06-2013
Laura Nelson(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-06-2013 The reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the staff was difficult to work with. Often I waited weeks to get an email reply, and anytime I asked for something additional there was always a cost. Also they changed their contract about 1 year after I signed it and added more limitations that added to the cost. Otherwise, the venue is gorgeous. My photographer loved it because every where you turn is a great photo op. If you get get past the sub par service, you wont be disappointed with the location Reviewed on 18-06-2013
Jennifer Hoff(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-10-2012 While we were fully aware of October weather in Minnesota, we thought paying several hundred dollars for two space heaters would be enough to warm the stone barn. Except, the heaters broke and not only didn't blow hot air, but cold air. And no one was on site who knew how to fix it. I didn't appreciate having my guests out on the lawn trying to fix the proprane tanks. Reviewed on 25-10-2012

One visit and you will fall in love with this venue. Our guests from all over the country could not believe a venue like this existed. Guests from the East and West coasts said that this venue for rental would start at $25,000 if the venue was located there. The owners and manager are awesome and the setting was a fairy tale. I would never get married any other place in Minnesota. Reviewed on 19-10-2012

The property is beautiful, and our guests are still raving about how breathtaking the venue was. We were married under the old oak tree, which was beyond picture perfect. It was wonderful to have an easy rain site option on the property, which would have been wonderful as well. Brianna Drees(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 23-06-2012 This is truly the most beautiful I could have imagined getting married. All of our guests were totally in awe of the setting. Everything for the most part was really great except a few things. At times it was difficult to get in touch and organize things with the barn. I also found that I had to re-state things multiple times that had already been discussed and taken care of. I do know that the barn has hired an event coordinator now which I think will be so helpful! They definitely need someone full time to organize all the details of the weddings :) Everyone was amazing help the weekend of the wedding and even though communication was sometimes lacking leading up to the big day, everything and everyone at the barn far exceeded my expectations! The area is absolutely breath-taking, allowing for great picture moments for our photographer. All of our guests commented on how unique the place was and kept asking us how we found it. It was convenient because we were allowed an outside caterer so we could choose one for our budget.
