River Edge was perfect for our needs. We looked at several venues but could not find any in West Michigan like this one. We love nature and scenic beauty, and this venue has it all. The house is charming and nostalgic. The view from the pavilion is breathtaking. Bill, Brenda and staff were so nice to work with and were always available to help answer all of our questions during setup. They did a great job maintaining the pavilion and grounds throughout the event, and we had only positive feedback from our guests. They all had a wonderful time. We appreciated that Bill took the time to transport us to the most popular areas for our sunset field photos. We did not want to be away from our guests for long, and knowing this, Bill offered to take us to the most popular spots first. As a result, we were able to photograph more field locations than we thought we might have had time for. Every aspect of our day was perfect, and we are so happy to have been able to experience it at River Edge. Thank you for sharing your beautiful space with us and our guests! Reviewed on 01-12-2023

The venue is absolutely beautiful and and we had a beautiful wedding there. I had some feedback for Bill (the owner) and tried to give it privately but I now feel that I have to share this with prospective renters for this venue. Some of the other reviews are absolutely correct, they will sit at a picnic table and watch you. This is in the contract that you will sign but there's nothing like seeing it in person to make you feel judged and watched. They do allow you to serve alcohol but there is extreme judgement there that you would want to serve it and they are waiting for things to go wrong. They do have 2 handicap spots but if someone tries to park there that is handicapped they will tell you that you have to move your car. They prefer the aesthetic of no vehicles parked down there. There are spots for beautiful pictures but be firm in what you want and what your photographer thinks are the best shots. Bill is adamant that he knows when and where to take the phots and does not like to hear otherwise.Again, I tried to share this with him in private and his response was to attack my character. This is obviously something that he has been told before and he does not care to hear it.I will not share everything that he said but his last words:\"In my opinion, you have just demonstrated what a totally unreasonable, inconsiderate person you are. I wish you had been up front with us in the first place, which would have given us the foreknowledge and opportunity to to decline the wedding. Examine Yourself!!\" Reviewed on 12-11-2023

This is an absolutely stunning wedding venue, which is the reason my husband and I fell in love with it. We had a beautiful wedding and we are grateful for the amazing moments we had, and the friends and family we celebrated with. That all being said, please save your money and do not use this venue. The owners will claim their faith to you at every opportunity they get, but then will attack your character the moment you provide any negative feedback to the venue or how it’s operated.Their rules are extreme, and they hover over the entire event. I felt like I was walking on eggshells with them from the moment I signed the contract, until the wedding was over. I received negative feedback from many of my other vendors, and well as guests about the owners, which is simply embarrassing.Just please do your research on them, read reviews, and pay specific attention to the way Bill (the owner) responds to negative feedback. We would highly Recommend Bill and Brenda’s place! The location is stunning and they have a few different ceremony locations to accommodate everyone. On top of that the reception area is close by and they have lights and a few decorations already hung! Communication was good throughout our entire experience and the day of they were onsite ready to help in anyway they could. Another thing we loved was the tour Bill took us on so that we could get the best locations on the property for photos.Lovely couple and venue. Thank you, Bill and Brenda!! Reviewed on 06-10-2023

Our wedding was absolutely beautiful! Bill and Brenda were very professional. They had EXTREAMLY thorough rules that we of course upheld. They were very kind throughout the entire process. I wouldn't have wanted any other venue. With that being said there were multiple moments during the planning process where I felt their rules didn't allow me to have everything I wanted. They do have a very small amount of things that fit inside of their contract. We found ways to work through it and find alternatives but this may not be something everyone is willing to do. Starting with the positives: The owners responded quickly to any questions I had, the venue setting is beautiful (if weather cooperates), you don't need many of your own decorations, and we appreciated being able to choose any licensed caterer. The negatives: They are very strict with rules, such as the loudness of music, the time of your ceremony and reception is set for you, you can only use one specific bartender and they close 90 minutes before the reception is over, you can't drive certain large vehicles on the property, and more. We were very respectful of these rules, followed all of them, and yet on our wedding day the owner approached my husband and other guests several times over minor, silly things that they could have fixed. There was a broken lock on the only private area for the wedding party to get dressed in. They wouldn't raise flaps on the pavilion to allow for more air flow, (it was 85 out and way hotter inside the pavilion), citing that the music would be too loud, but they don't have any sound-absorbing items inside the pavilion. One of our biggest issues is it is not disability-friendly at all. Our grandma is 93 years old and the bathrooms are very far away from where the reception is held. They are not willing to use their equipment to transport anyone, and wouldn't let someone use their car to bring another disabled person from the pavilion to the bathroom. The owner approached a bridesmaid at 10pm and told her the wedding party needed to remove belongings from the only area to store anything in, and the reception was ending at 10:30. Our groomsmen used an outdoor area with a table to \"hang out\" while photos were happening, and they were told it's the staff area, yet there's no other place for the groomsmen to go. My husband ended up getting a bad cut on his finger while cleaning up that area, because there was no light in this area to see what he was doing. It felt like the owners were there to police the day and remind us of every rule, rather than to be flexible and helpful on our wedding day. We still had a great time because our family and friends were all there, and our other vendors were great, but it doesn't feel like a place where they're interested in doing customer service. It's a lot of money to pay, and even when we followed all the rules we kept being reminded of them on our actual wedding day. They could use just a little more flexibility and understanding. This venue is absolutely stunning. We were searching for an outdoor venue that is not a barn or country club and River’s Edge was a great fit for us. On the banks of the Flat River, it offers 3 different ceremony sites to choose from with gorgeous scenic backdrops. The reception pavilion is decorated with lights in the rafters and behind the head table. It can be heated for cooler fall evenings, like our October wedding. The bridal suite is quite small, however my bridal party got hair and makeup done off site and didn’t utilize that space except to get dressed and store our belongings. They only allow one bar service and enforce the no outside alcohol rule (even if getting ready in the bridal suite and gifts) but it did not affect our day. The owners, Bill and Brenda, are great to work with. They have quick communication and have multiple add ons to make your day individualized. One of the add ons is having them move the chairs from the ceremony site to the reception. However, after much debate, my husband and I agreed to opt out of this option and had our guests carry their own chairs and it was no big deal. Also, there was only 2 stalls for the bathroom. Our only regret was not adding on additional options for our guests to use. After my husband and I finished, while the guests were still eating, Bill snuck us out for sunset pictures–they turned out beautiful. Overall, our day was perfect and I 10/10 recommend this venue. Sydney Ditlow-Gladney(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 12-10-2019 The venue was beautiful, and Bill & Brenda were very responsive but were HORRIBLE to work with the day of the wedding. They came to me (the bride) with multiple issues the day of and they hovered around us and inspected everything we were doing while we were setting up and getting ready and made a very stressful day even more stressful. Brenda wore a long white sweater all day (my bridesmaid mistook her for me at one point) and Bill attended the wedding in his work clothes. Then they sat at one of our reception tables and ate our food without our permission. There was “miscommunication” about what candles we could use so we had to have our DJ go buy plates to go under them so we could use them. Bill berated my mother in law about who she was and what she was doing when she tried going back to the pavilion after she got ready (even though she’d been there all day). I made up gift baskets for my girls with wine in them and Brenda made my bridesmaid take the wine back to the car (even though her hands were full and it was about 50 degrees out and windy) even though we promised we weren’t going to drink it, it was strictly a gift. My bridesmaid was so frustrated and angry that she was almost in tears. Our ceremony started late because the parking attendant was directing people to the pavilion because it was cold instead of the ceremony site. On a positive note, Bill was kind enough to take my husband and I along with our photographer out on the property on his quad with a trailer to get some beautiful pictures. However, he belittled her on several occasions by making comments about how he could do her job and her job was so easy. Finally, when we first met with Bill and Brenda, they told us that they would only charge us for the number of seats that were used and we would get a refund for any guests that didn’t attend but the contract was just vague enough that it could be interpreted either way and of course, they didn’t honor the conversation we had. It’s a beautiful venue and location but with all of the issues we had with them the day of and after the wedding, we would highly recommend that you find a different place for your wedding. Kelly Trisch(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 09-09-2017 I was asked to leave a review a while back, so please excuse me as my memory is a bit dated. Overall, I would give this a 3.5 stars (not an option when giving a rating).Overall experience: Overall I felt that my personal experience as a bride came second to maintaining their property. I found out half way through dinner that Brenda had taken it upon herself to follow my mother in to the bed and breakfast, step in front of her before entering, and had the nerve to say \"I'm just making sure you're going to take your shoes off.\" Now, I did read and understand the contract. I did also talk to each of my party members beforehand as well about the no-shoes policy among other things. However, I can't follow around every party member throughout the day to make sure they're following the rules. I do understand that members of my party at times were running into the house and may or may not have been taking their shoes off. I wish I would have just been billed for any instances/damages caused instead of having staff personally confronting my bridal party about this. As soon as I found out that my mom had been personally singled-out, it pretty much ruined my mood for the night. Obviously as a bride, I want my bridal party to feel at-ease and have just as much as a good time that I am. I can't however say that I was comfortable with how my mom was treated. Like I said, just bill me de-facto if damages were caused by my party; just bite your tongue on the most important day of my life and confront me the day after. Communication: Bill is very responsive to emails. All of my questions were answered the same day.Venue: The site is beautiful, which is obvious. However, the layout is difficult for handicapped visitors. Also, I wish there would have been at the very least a handicapped bathroom. It was difficult for our family member in a wheelchair to use the restroom. I understood that I could have rented porta-potties, however, being a bride on a budget I simply couldn't afford that. The temperature in the tent does get a bit chilly, but nothing that is insufferable. I did rent their heater, however, when it was plugged in our DJ said that it was interfering with his speakers, so we had to unplug it. Thankfully we didn't end up needing to use it, but if we did, the DJ wouldn't have been able to fully perform what I paid him to do. Money down the drain. Reviewed on 14-02-2018

The house is beautiful as well, and the dressing building is cozy. Beth K.(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-05-2017 The most beautiful wedding venue! From my first visit I fell in love. Definitely a great choice if wanting an outdoor ceremony! The pavilion is lovely as well, great plan B for weather, and also beautiful reception spot! The pavilion is very open so good breeze coming through on hot summer evenings.I would give a 5 star however my only wish would be that the reception party could last until 11pm as opposed to 10pm. It was nice to end early due to the long day, but the party was so much fun I did not want it to stop! Reviewed on 23-06-2017
Michelle Radcliffe(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 24-06-2016 River Edge Bed and Breakfast was an absolutely gorgeous place for a wedding. If you are looking for something rustic, something vintage, something elegant and something with an incredible view- River Edge is your place. The white, bright, open pavilion makes a perfect canvas for decorating according to your Pinterest dreams, but the venue certainly does not need an over-abundance of decor- it is gorgeous as is. The ceremony site overlooking a field with the river running through it and the tree line standing beyond it. . . simply breathtaking. The price is great for the package you recieve as well as the guest service and care. My now husband and I agree that River Edge was perfect for our wedding and we encourage others to look into it to make their dream day a perfect day. Reviewed on 01-07-2016
MaKala Mitchell(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 20-09-2015 \r\r We used River Edge Bed & Breakfast & Gathering Place for our wedding and reception. The scenery and pavilion are absolutely beautiful and we got complements from many family and friends about the amazing venue. However, this is just part of the reason I would recommend River Edge Bed & Breakfast & Gathering Place to anyone who is looking for a great venue. An equally important reason is the people who run it, Bill and Brenda Schruer. They are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Our special day was a huge success, and much of that can be attributed to the help of Bill and Brenda and their beautiful venue. I would HIGHLY recommend River Edge Bed & Breakfast & Gathering Place to anyone. Reviewed on 15-10-2015
Anonymous (bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 20-09-2014 We just had our wedding in September at River's Edge B&B. It was so nice to find a place that was open to any and all ideas we had and worked with us throughout the entire process to make sure our day was everything we could have asked for! A lot of sites we looked at told us what they had to offer and that was what we could do. We wanted to make sure our wedding was us and not just a cookie cutter that the site offered and Bill and Brenda did that for us!\r\rThe site has multiple locations for the ceremony and the pavilion is absolutely beautiful!!! We had some rain the day of our wedding and Bill and Brenda had the sides down on the pavilion and everyone stayed perfectly dry. The fans inside the pavilion kept the air moving so it didn't get stuffy or too hot. Everything about the site and location has been so well thought out, there is not a single thing we would have changed!!! We had a large wedding and everything went off without a hitch, even with the rain!\r\rBill and Brenda are great to work with and will do everything in their power to make your day everything you dreamed of and more, they definitely did for us! I would and do highly recommend this site to any and all brides, I promise, just go look and you will fall in love like my husband and I did! We can't wait to go back to the B&B for our anniversaries in the years to come. Reviewed on 10-10-2014
Jessica Walker(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 09-08-2014 My husband and I spent a lot of time looking at outdoor wedding venues in the area. We initially considered county parks but ruled them out because of the lack of privacy. We also looked at barn venues. Even though we had what I consider an average-size wedding, none of them were big enough to fit our entire party. Dividing our party into two separate groups was not acceptable to us. I've also heard they can be hot and stuffy inside--not ideal for our planned summer wedding.\r\rA coworker told me about River Edge B&B and Gathering Place. We were stunned by the scenic beauty of the property. The river and scenic backdrop was like nothing else we had seen. The new pavilion is beautiful and had more than enough space for all our guests, buffet, DJ, and dance floor. The roll up/down sides have attractive cathedral windows, allowing us to adjust the pavilion quickly and easily depending on the weather--making for a worry-free wedding day.\r\rIt was hard to choose from the three different ceremony sites on the property. All are beautiful yet unique to each other. The restored 1880s B&B farmhouse feels like a step back in time--so charming and cozy with a great view of the river--really cool! Their big, old red barn, silo, outbuilding, and (antique) tractor wagon ride appealed to us for neat photos.\r\rUnfortunately our first two choices for a date were already booked, but we were really glad we could make another date work for us that was still available. Bill and Brenda and their staff were great to work with and very helpful. Our guests loved River Edge and still rave about it. Our photographer had a field day there with so many beautiful and intriguing spots to take our photos. River Edge has so much variety! It was perfect for us, and we highly recommend River Edge to anyone looking for a unique outdoor wedding venue. Reviewed on 06-10-2014

Mary Margaret Healy(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 28-06-2014 My husband and I had the extreme honor of being the first wedding ever at River Edge B&B and Gathering Place. When we were looking into using it as our venue, I was honestly a little worried about being the first, but I'm so glad I got past those, because we really could not have had a better day, and we owe much of that to Bill and Brenda, the owners of River Edge, and their amazing property.\r\rTo start, the property itself is amazing. Beautiful, natural, and outfitted with a charming B&B and a pavilion that is both convenient and classy. The weather on our wedding day cooperated wonderfully, and it rained only after the reception started. We were all safely housed in the pavilion by that point, and it was so much better than any rented tent could ever have been, with its cement floor and sturdy roof. \r\rEven after the rain, and even though we were in the peak of bug season, we did not have much of a mosquito problem. They were not even too bad down by the river. Bill and Brenda do not spray their property for bugs for ecological reasons, and we did not experience any adverse effects from that.\r\rMy bridesmaids and I used the B&B to get ready, and we had a great time and were very comfortable. It's a small building, and I had seven bridesmaids as well as two photographers, but it did not get uncomfortable. My husband and his groomsmen were in the much smaller whirlpool building, and had no complaints. It did get hot that day, but we managed to share the B&B before the ceremony so that we could cool off.\r\rWhat really made River Edge wonderful, though, was its owners, Bill and Brenda Schreur. My husband and I live in Pittsburgh, far away from Lowell, and they bent over backwards to accommodate our long-distance needs, including meeting with proxies to tour the property and communicating mostly by phone and email. The week before the wedding, they worked as hard as I did to make sure everything was ready and that every contingency was planned for. On the day, when plans had to change on the spot (due primarily to the constantly changing weather) the transitions were seamless and I never noticed if anything went wrong. They worked very hard, not only to make our day as special as possible, but also as stress-free as possible. Both Bill and Brenda were such wonderful people and so accommodating to all of our vendors, (many of whom were family or friends). \r\rIf you don't believe me that River Edge is the best outdoor venue in the greater Grand Rapids area, let me just say this: when I told people that ours was the first wedding hosted at River Edge, I got a lot of stunned faces and unbelieving, \"You've got to be kidding!\"s. I even got an email from a friend the day after the wedding telling me that ours was \"one of the most beautiful weddings [she's] ever had the honor to attend. Everything was awesome and [she] can't stop telling people about how well the B&B did (especially for their first wedding)!\" \r\rFor all the value--beauty, convenience, great service, etc.--that we got from using River Edge for our venue, I can't believe how well it worked with our budget, which was rather tight.\r\rWe can't thank Bill and Brenda enough, and we'd recommend their services to anyone. esther de Blacam(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-09-2013 My now husband and I had the extreme pleasure of staying at River Edge Bed and Breakfast & Gathering Place on our wedding night. In so many different ways the owners, Bill and Brenda, went beyond the expected to make our stay special. While planning our wedding in Lowell, I stumbled on the website for the bed and breakfast. The pictures of the property were so beautiful; I immediately called to see if they had any availability. \r\rWe ended up be being there first customers, and couldn’t have been more happy. The day before the wedding I stopped by the bed and breakfast. Bill and Brenda were busily working on getting the place ready, but stopped and gave me a tour of the property. The place was breathtaking. The house had all the charm of a farmhouse with the conveniences of modernism. The property is situated next to the river where they have built an overlook where the old dam was situated. We hadn’t originally planned on having pictures taken there but upon seeing the place decided that we would return after the wedding for pictures. \r\rBill had mentioned that they were planning on using the location for weddings. If the property had been open and available at the time we were scouting locations we would have chosen the bed and breakfast. The property is close enough to town that it’s easy to get to but the expanse of the property allows for privacy. We have beautiful pictures getting ready with the backdrop of the farmhouse, as well as with my husband and I in the open fields and by the river. Bill and Brenda went out of their way to make our stay perfect, including kayak rides down the river and gourmet breakfast. Based on our experience, I know that they would far exceed any bride and grooms hopes.\r Reviewed on 27-10-2013
