The Winery at Bull Run Reviews

We had the most amazing day at The Winery at Bull Run! Despite Tropical Storm Ophelia, Faith, Courtney, and winery staff went above and beyond to make sure that our special day went off without a hitch. When we had to move our ceremony inside due to the weather, Faith and Courtney worked with us on ceremony logistics to ensure that we were happy with the changes made and our guests would be comfortable. The space is absolutely gorgeous and we could not have asked for a better venue! Reviewed on 11-10-2023

My husband and I were recently married and held our reception at Bull Run Winery on 9.9.2023 and we absolutely loved our overall experience! The venue itself offers the beauty of a winery with a historic twist - which my historian husband loved! The team at the winery was always quick to respond to our questions and assured that our day went well and that all was taken care of! As other reviews stated, the winery is wonderful and offers many resources to help make your day special - including hotel recommendations in the area and preferred caterers that you must choose from. This may seem restrictive to some but we loved working with Surefire Catering who worked especially hard to make our late nite French Fry bar dreams come true! Also mentioned was that they only allow decorations to be brought a few hours before the event which can be stressful but the team allowed us to leave a car with decorations in the lot overnight and the staff made the room look amazing! We wholeheartedly recommend Bull Run Winery to anyone shopping around for wedding venues in the Northern VA area! Reviewed on 07-10-2023

I put some disclaimers at the end, so feel free to scroll if you don't want to read my long glowing review and just want to get the quick rundown. My husband and I just had our wedding on Saturday and I cannot say enough good things about the wedding and it's execution, from the moment we booked our date, to the end of the reception. We chose to have our ceremony outside and then our reception in the main tasting room, with cocktail hour in the barrel room/adjacent patio. Their event team was absolutely fabulous; Courtney and Faith were with us every step of the way. They were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in decision making and super quick to respond. I can't think of a time where it took longer than a few hours for them to reply to an email. On the actual day of our wedding, they were super efficient and streamlined our event. We didn't have a rehearsal and it didn't matter, things were so incredibly smooth. They made sure everybody was where they needed to be, when they needed to be there. It was outstanding. From the smallest details, to the most obvious, they were on point. I literally didn't have to worry about anything other than walking down the aisle. Courtney and Faith were crucial to our day and I would absolutely not change a thing about our wedding day, a large part due to them and their incredible work. A couple of need-to-know things: -They have a list of 6 or 7 catering companies that you MUST choose from. They include some great ones-highly recommend Spilled Milk...but if you have a certain company in mind, be aware. -The bridal suite for the main tasting room/outside ceremony is really small. I had 6 bridesmaids and with the hair/makeup artist and my mom it was really tight trying to get everyone in, steamed and dressed. It all worked out, but just a tad stressful. - I don't think this is anything that could be controlled, but come dance-time, it did get very hot in the tasting room. Again, its a big space with 110 people in it and it was July in the DMV so just something to be aware of! -Finally, you can only get into the bridal suite/drop things off 2 hours before your ceremony time. The vendors aren't allowed to set up until 2 hours before as well. This is incredibly tight, especially if you aren't located near the venue. This includes all decoration and the beer/wine if you are providing it yourself. We had fairly simple decorations, so it didn't end up being a huge deal, but again, just adds a little extra stress in the days leading up to it. ALL THAT BEING SAID, I WOULD CHOOSE THE WINERY AT BULL RUN AGAIN AND AGAIN AND RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE THINKING ABOUT BOOKING WITH THEM...AND THOSE NOT THINKING ABOUT IT! DOOOOOO IT! My husband and I got married in May of 2023 at the Winery at Bull Run, and it was absolutely perfect! Our ceremony was outside at the Hillwood Ruins, and the reception was held in the Barrel Room located under their large tasting room. Nichole Koob was our Event Coordinator and was absolutely fantastic to work with! She was such a professional from the beginning I never had a doubt that things would go just as I had wanted. My dream wedding came true and I couldn’t have done it without her help! Her passion truly shows in her work. On my wedding day I didn’t have to do a single thing but show up, and Nichole checked on me throughout the night to make sure Joey and I were having the best day (ever)! We had our wedding outdoors and heard from a number of our guests how much they enjoyed the winery and nearby scenery during our evening ceremony. The main building and courtyard were excellent reception and cocktail hours spaces. The wine, which you are required to purchase from them, was affordable and - most importantly - tasted great. My husband and I began wedding planning just a few weeks shy of the world shutting down due to COVID-19. I remember we had booked with BR in February 2020 a few weeks later everything closed. Despite all the chaos and the uncertainty Julie and Paria were with us every step of the way. Even after the heart break of having to push our wedding date, these ladies were our guiding post and kept us informed every step of the way.COVID aside- My husband and I live out of state so that added a whole different level of complexity to the wedding planning process. Nonetheless, we were guided and supported throughout the entire journey. Paria and the entire event staff went above and beyond. Their attention to detail and desire to meet our wedding dreams were truly outstanding. Bull Run is a beautiful venue with beautiful areas of pictures. It is a gorgeous winery with lots of greats spots for pictures. The staff is very helpful and responded to my emails promptly. I mostly worked with Paria, and she was wonderful. I always felt like our voices were heard and we felt very well taken care of. Planning a wedding during COVID was hard, but Bull Run was always on top of things. We were able to leave a car with all of our decorations in the Winery's parking lot the day before the event which gave us the ability to just focus on getting readythe morning of the event. The staff then set everything up according to how we told them to. We got married in October 2020 and even with Covid they were able to accommodate everything. We ended up having rain and had to move the Ceremony to there indoor space which was very beautiful and took the staff no time at all to turn into our cocktail hour space. Stevie Knutson(bride)2 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-11-2020 The Wedding Venue itself is beautiful. And, If you have the money to hire a full event team, this will work great. I can't be sure, but I believe that the wedding lead quit between when I signed my contact and when my wedding happened. I was not notified of the change, and after a handful of unanswered emails to the previous director, I was contacted by someone new.During my final walk through, It was very evident that the staff had no idea what they were doing. The venue advertises that they include a day-of coordinator/team but that's honestly just to ensure their space is ok. We shared maybe three people between both event going on and as my guests arrived they had no idea where to go, parking was also HARD to come by for guests since they don't close until 7. The kicker was that the POC emailed me 30 days before my ceremony to let me know my guests would have to stand because the space I chose wouldn't fit my guest count (not COVID related). 30 days before she let me know this... after signing my contract nearly a year earlier. My take-aways were:- Don't count on their staff for anything but protecting their venue (get your own coordinator, you will need it)- Beautiful venue that will make for beautiful photos-Think about transport for your guests so they don't have to hunt for parking (or tell them to arrive early)-Make sure you're organized and ask EVERY question, because they will not be. Alison Natali(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 14-05-2016 It took me three years to post this review that I wrote one week after my May 14, 2016 wedding at The Winery at Bull Run. I have been, and still am, devastated by that day. This day - that was supposed to be the best - was ruined. When I gave feedback to the venue after (see note below about the winery manager, George - one of the most offensive men I've ever met), they told me I was petty and only \"wanted money.\" It turned into an incredibly disrespectful screaming match in which I was not the instigator. Unprofessional. Impolite. I refuse to go back after all this time. In the past years, I have even have put a stop to multiple work events from being held here based on my experience. The venue is lovely but the people are not. Their execution is terrible and it feels like you are working for them leading up to the event. I spent hours making it as easy as possible for them to execute - including binders with details about every single item and timeline that no staff read. And it still went poorly. Some things to consider before you book there:- They say a \"Day of Coordinator\" is included. This means a TON of pre work for you. The communication is poor and the extensive documentation that needed to be filled out (and I had no idea) was not given to me until I asked for it in March leading up to the wedding.- No flexibility. You cannot bring anything to the venue until two hours prior. Consider that in your \"getting ready\" timeline and find some family and friends to bring all of your things in a (rented) van two hours prior - decor, beer, everything. - Poor communication. The Day of Coordinator changed from Natasha to Amanda and it was not made clear until I asked at my pre meeting at the end of March (6 weeks before the wedding). - Execution is totally off. Many of my guests were unable to eat since vendors were eating off the buffet. People were coming up to me and my husband and complaining at the event. Trays of food went missing. Embarrassing.- General chaos. This is still an open and operating winery until 7 PM. So people are everywhere. Lots of background noise. Staff is trying to do too many things at once with little guidance.- Refusal to move the ceremony. It was raining prior to my ceremony and then the sun came out. They would not move it to the outside venue (which was a main part of why we booked there).I think the worst part was when I called to speak to them after the event. I spoke to the coordinator shortly thereafter and she no longer seemed interested in communicating since since my event was over. Finally the GM (George) reached out he was incredibly defensive and, in my opinion VERY unprofessional. He blamed the caterer over and over for everything. He would not own the actions of his staff and asked why I didn't just book my wedding elsewhere if I was so unhappy.Honestly, I wanted to look back on this day fondly and I cannot. Something I spent so much time, energy, effort and money on is ruined. On top of that I feel disrespected by the staff who were so offensive. Don't go there and definitely don't ruin your expensive day. Reviewed on 15-08-2019
Sandra Filipp(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 22-06-2019 Planning a wedding from out of state can be challenging, but the moment I walked up to The Winery at Bull Run I knew it was the place for us to get married. Julie helped walk us through all things wedding the first time we met, and Meredith and Amanda were an absolute pleasure to work with from afar and in person. We wanted our wedding to be FUN, with an option for people to spend time indoors or outdoors throughout the evening. Our ceremony was at the hillside ruins on a picturesque day, and our cocktail hour and reception were at the new production barn. Meredith helped coordinate all details for the evening- from timeline to seating to corn hole and fire sets- and the entire TWABR team helped create our perfect wedding. Everyone was so helpful and attentive throughout our entire evening, and Meredith made me feel completely at ease. We visited 10+ venues before we got to Bull Run and as soon as we met the staff and stepped on site, we knew it was where we had to get married. Amanda and Sarah were so helpful during the entire wedding planning process. Even though they were only meant to help with day of coordination, both answered every email and question I had leading up to our big day (and trust me I had a ton!). Everything went smoothly and we couldn't have asked for a better night and place to celebrate. The best perk that we enjoyed was having the hotel already pre-negotiated. Allison Smith(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-08-2017 Our wedding at the Winery at Bull Run was so amazing! It was a little bit of a rocky start with the sales team and we had some apprehensions but after we booked and started working with the events team everything went without a hitch! The wedding schedule at this venue is a little rigid because they are open to the public during the day and for catering you have to work off of an approved vendor list but the good news is all of the catering companies on the list are top notch. You do have to buy wine from the venue but you can get a license through VA and purchase your own beer to serve at the event which is great to help with the alcohol costs. The event team is wonderful and we really enjoyed working with Amanda and Sarah. They are both professional and provided us with great advice and resources for planning our day. The pre-wedding meeting with the winery and the caterers was really valuable and provided my husband and I the opportunity to go over every little detail and have all of our questions answered. There isn't really a bridal suite at this venue so myself and the bridesmaids did hair and make-up at home then met our photographer in the barrel room to take photos changing into my dress and little details. For the first look, the winery offered lots of options and there are a ton of spots for photos. We were lucky enough to have great weather on our wedding day and had our ceremony on the ruins which was really beautiful. Sarah and Amanda made sure everything went as planned and the day ran smoothly so I could relax and enjoy my wedding. All of the staff was on their A game and made sure we were taken care of whether it was a glass of wine, water for my bouquet, or making sure we got to eat dinner in peace. Everything turned out perfect and I didn't have to be involved or stress at all. I would highly recommend the Winery at Bull Run based on the amazing staff, beautiful venue, and overall experience! We rented the entire venue which in addition to being gorgeous is such great value because your guests have use of the outdoor space in addition to indoors! The wine is fantastic, and unlike a lot of other places you don't have to pre-buy - you're charged on consumption and just pay the tab at the end of the night. So easy. You don't need a lot of decor because all of the settings (Hillwood Ruins, Barrel Room, and Tasting Room) are already beautiful on their own. Tawnya Ravy(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 25-05-2018 Having our wedding at the Bull Run Winery was a great decision! The grounds are beautiful and the tasting room is perfect for a wedding reception. What I loved about it (besides the wine which is probably my favorite VA wine) is you do not need a lot of extra decor. Because they have twinkle lights and display cases with civil war stuff, it has more visual interest than your average venue. We picked February for a few reasons, but mainly because the venue fee was HALF what it is in the peak season and *usually* the winery is all but empty on a winter day. This winery's popularity has exploded in recent years, so a nice day means the grounds, tasting room, etc. are crawling with people. What we did not expect, in Feb, was for it to be a sunny 70 degree day, so we did, in fact, have to deal with the crowds. Now the winery does a fairly good job at helping you pull this thing off with so many people, but I was not prepared for the hordes of winery guests that were milling about everywhere that I wanted to get a decent picture. If you do get married here, just prepare yourself. We still managed to get some nice pictures, but it was chaos. The good part about the full winery is that after our ceremony ended, and our guests clapped, the whole winery erupted into cheers and clapping - I wasn't expecting that either, but they did it and it was very memorable. In the end, we were super thankful for the nice weather even if we weren't planning on the crowds. A few other things to know: do not get dressed at the winery. They're \"small dressing room\" is an office full of stuff. Make sure someone is keeping track of time - our reception started late bc of one winery guest who would not leave the bar upstairs, so my maids intervened. Bring shoes to stand in and shoes to walk in - gravel will be your nemesis no matter how sensible your bridal footwear seems. Amanda was our D.O. coordinator and did a great job! Amanda was always on hand to answer any questions I had (I had a lot!) and was very warm and professional. On the big day, huge wind gusts threatened everything from our signs and flower arrangements to the wine blending ceremony we had prepared, Amanda was out at the Hillwood ruins taping everything down to make sure that everything was still the way we wanted it, talk about going above and beyond. A few things happened on our wedding day that had the potential to ruin the celebration, and Amanda and the staff did an unbelievable job keeping us on track. A massive thunderstorm rolled in about 40 minutes before our (outside!) ceremony was supposed to start, and the winery staff immediately moved everything inside and set up the Barrel Room and made everything absolutely beautiful. I ended up getting very sick right after the reception started, and a member of the winery staff actually ran out to a pharmacy to pick me up some medicine! Because of this, I was able to rejoin the reception and have a wonderful time. Our timeline got screwed up due to my illness, but Amanda and the team worked with all of our vendors to revise it on the spot and made sure that we were still able to fit in all of the special moments we had planned for. The deal they have with a local hotel made the experience convenient for traveling guests as well. The staff we worked with, Natasha and Allison, were very responsive and helpful. Allison was amazing the day of the wedding. She was accommodating and ensured everything was done right and we were happy. Having her that day really helped relieve stress. The only con to the venue was noise from customers directly behind the ruins and cars driving on the gravel road next to the ruins during our ceremony. From the first time I met Natasha I knew that this was the perfect place to have our wedding. She is so friendly, responsive and completely understands and listens to everything you want. She also comes up with great suggestions. Our day was absolutely perfect and Natasha and Eddie were a huge reason for this. When our candles blew out because of the wind, Natasha was quick to find LED candles to throw in our hurricanes. When I was walking back down the aisle, I kicked off my heels because the grass was uneven and she grabbed my shoes and took them for me. She was there every step of the way for me and I cannot thank her enough. My vision came out beautifully and I have her, Eddie and the TWABR staff to thank for that. I highly recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a great value and personal service that cannot be topped. Also, to note, their wine is fantastic!! I still am getting compliments on how wonderful the venue was. If I would do it all over again, I would choose TWABR again in a heartbeat!! Reviewed on 14-11-2013
Katherine Benedict(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-11-2013 The first time I visited The Winery at Bull Run, I knew it was the place I wanted to get married. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, the gorgeous scenery painted a romantic picture, perfect for a wedding. From the Ruins where the outside ceremony was held to the Barrel Room for the reception, The Winery at Bull Run was the perfect amount of simple elegance mixed with a homey, warm feeling. Not only was The Winery a perfect location, but The Winery’s staff, especially Natasha and Eddie, were always able to answer my many questions and ease my worries, leading up to the big day. On the wedding day, Natasha and Eddie helped to make the day go on without a hitch. It was very obvious that they loved their job. If I had to do it all over again, there is no doubt in my mind that I would still want to get married at The Winery at Bull Run. It doesn’t hurt that their wine is delicious too. Monica Dyer(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 08-06-2013 The Winery at Bull Run has been open for a year and has a pretty great event staff for how new they are. The value of the winery to rent was affordable in comparison to other wineries we had checked out and they include everything (besides linens)and don't add extra fees. Natasha and Eddie met with us and did our final walk-thru and were very helpful on the day of. The one downfall to having your event here is that they stay open to the public during your event and try and get guests of the winery out of the tasting room (if that's a space you're using)maybe 45 minutes before you need the space. I was a little concerned that the tables/chairs and decor wouldn't be set out in time, but (almost) everything was in it's place when they allowed our guests in. I had brought some decor/favors the day before and some of the stuff was left in the barrel room that were meant to be put out. So give detailed instructions prior to so they know what to do and where to place things. Another tip would be to get ready at another location, as they really don't have the space to accommodate a bridal party to do hair/makeup and dress in their small office space.
