From day one, she was always so quick to respond to any questions we had and was such a big help in communicating logistics and other information to our vendors as we got closer to our wedding day which was such a big help. Soldiers and Sailors was the perfect venue! Katie was so great to work with. She was quick to respond to our emails and super helpful with answering all of our questions. All of our tables were provided and in place well before our wedding. Everything was set up perfectly when we arrived. The venue is a beautiful space both inside and outside. We love the architecture, colors, hardwood floors, 3rd floor balcony, and SUPER high ceiling. It is a timeless space and was perfect for our classic wedding. We were able to drop off items the week leading up to our wedding and pick them up the Monday after so there was no stress about clearing everything out the day after. It is central to Oakland with lots to do, plenty of hotels, and a convenient parking garage underneath. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue! Reviewed on 09-06-2023

Marissa Hardy(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 01-04-2023 I believe that using Soldiers & Sailors as our venue and working with Katie contributed in large part to our wedding being as amazing and stress free as possible. It was apparent from our first meeting with Katie that she goes above and beyond, especially compared to other venues we visited. Throughout the planning process she answered all of our questions quickly and her attention to every detail was fantastic. She made it easy to accommodate our handicap needs and even connected with the parking garage when we had concerns over local event the same weekend. It was very helpful that they let you bring in your DIY and things for the wedding day a few days early and store it after the wedding. Katie is well known and well loved in the industry and worked seamlessly with all of our vendors. When Katie was unavailable, every staff member we interacted with was equally as professional and helpful. The architecture and design inside wowed our guests, and my husband's family even has ties to the museum with photos of his family in their archives that Katie pulled out for us to see and take photo with on the wedding day. We chose to get married in the auditorium, but even if the ceremony is outside, we really liked the way the reception was separate but in the same building, just upstairs. I was starting to feel discouraged until I met Katie and Amber. Every other wedding venue I met with spent about 10 minutes or less with me and my groom, and I could never visualize the special day. Katie and Amber's tour of Soldiers & Sailors was at least an hour. These ladies have thought of EVERYTHING and know how to make an event perfect. Before I left my tour, I already had pictures from at least 5 other brides' weddings with similar color schemes to help with decor ideas and a stack of vendor recommendations. If you're getting married in Pittsburgh, I cannot imagine a more perfect wedding venue. Turning onto Fifth ave from Bigelow Blvd. and seeing this grand building is just so incredible. We got married on the front stairs outside and it was PERFECT. The ballroom to host the reception is such an amazing space. The venue allows you to start dropping off decor/supplies on the Tuesday before your wedding, which is UNHEARD OF, and they allow you to pick up your items on the Monday after your wedding. Dana Salopek(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 22-06-2019 The absolute best and most beautiful venue! My husband and I had our wedding reception at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, and to say the least we were blown away by how perfect everything was. From the staff, to the service, to the outstanding features of this facility, anyone looking for a venue must look here. My husband and I didn’t even bother to look anywhere else once we were told to about having our reception here. It was our first and only option as a venue. We had the privilege of working with Angela Tomlin, who was phenomenal. She was so easy to work with, flexible, answered promptly any questions we had, and helped set everything up on our special day that left us speechless. We can’t speak more highly of S&S. Brittaney Cichon McMahon(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 18-05-2019 I cannot say enough about this venue. It’s beautiful and very accommodating. I exclusively worked with Amber, and she was simply amazing. Amber was instrumental in her guidance to ensure our vision was executed exactly how we wanted. Amber always took the time to field my questions, and allowed me to come in over the course of my planning with various family members so that I could show them the space. I always felt that I was being heard, and my questions were always answered. I could tell that she was as invested in my day as I was and that was truly special. The bar is run through Soldiers and Sailors for the wedding. The bartenders were extremely professional and fast – we had so many compliments about how wonderful they were. We were able to drop off our things for the wedding during the whole week leading up to it (guest book, card box, etc.). That was great and so organized which put my mind at ease. They are caring, thoughtful, fun, and are experts in perfecting a wedding day. I felt completely supported by them and was so grateful for their help and advice along the way. They truly go above and beyond and it makes a huge difference. Thank you Amber and Angela <3Your guests will be wowed from the moment they walk in the door. We received countless compliments about our choice in venue. We had our cocktail hour in the museum and guests loved viewing the artifacts throughout. The bridal party used the upstairs boardroom for our cocktail hour and we had so much fun having a dedicated space that was also rich in history. My favorite part about the hall is the ceiling. Both the indoor and outdoor space are so picturesque!!! Angela, Aly, and Amber were all wonderful in helping us decide what we wanted. We used Big Burrito as our caterer and people *still* rave about the food at our wedding, six months later!! Not only that, the venue is absolutely stunning – our reception there took everyone’s breath away!Amber and Katie did absolutely everything in their power to make sure we had a perfect day! Not only did they provide a killer list of preferred vendors (we became so close with our caterer because of their recommendation!), both Amber and Katie took time out of their busy schedules to speak to me on the phone, provide recommendations about our wedding day timeline, discuss logistics, etc. I was planning from another city so often only had time on the weekends to come to Pittsburgh, and they always made sure they had someone available to talk to me when necessary. We had our ceremony out front and with 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen, it worked perfectly! Our cocktail hour was upstairs in the foyer and reception in the amazing ballroom. The ballroom really transformed with the tables and chairs. Everyone came up to us telling us how awesome the venue is. The balcony around the ballroom was also really cool to have-- there may have been a congo line going around that balcony at one point! I primarily worked with Angela. She was AMAZING!! She was so dedicated to making the night perfect for me and my family. Everything ran smoothly and on time. She also gave us some great ideas and took all of the stress of vendor coordinator off my plate. Amber and Katie were also awesome. They helped out so much day of. In addition to those 3, the overall staff - maintenance workers, security, bar tenders, everyone was extremely nice and helpful. They have a list of preferred vendors, but multiple of each, so you can work with a range of price points and tastes to find one that fits. This has to be one of the premier venues in the city and I'm so glad I chose S&S. We also had our ceremony out in front of the building, which was beautiful and highly convenient for guests. When we toured venues in September 2016 for a spring-summer-fall 2017 wedding, almost all venues we saw had plenty of availability except for S&S, which was almost booked solid on Saturdays. We got in only because of a cancellation. That speaks to its popularity and reputation!Things S&S doesn't brag about but should:You save money on a day of coordinator because the S&S ladies are there, either one or two of them, on the day of, making sure all goes well. They let us come in starting the TUESDAY before my Saturday wedding to drop things off, and we had through Monday to clean up. I can't say enough about how much stress and hassle that saved us and our parents. No last-minute rushing or late-night cleanup for us! We got to walk in Saturday with everything already done and walk out at the end to go to our afterparty without a second thought! The bathrooms are huge! Ten stalls in the ladies' room meant no one spent my wedding waiting in line to use the bathroom. The balcony! We had planned our wedding with the venue for over a year and Amber, Aly, and Angela were excellent. We came in with a lot of questions on our first visit and they were so patient, knowledgeable, and understanding. They were easy to communicate with and they went above and beyond in helping us to coordinate with all of the different vendors and allowing us to visit the ballroom on different occasions. Amber, Aly, and Angela also worked with the caterer to accommodate all of the requests and adjustments that we needed. On the night of the reception, the staff worked very quickly behind the scenes to supervise the evening, make adjustments, and keep things moving (the smallest things that they did made the biggest differences.) We handled and chose to set up the majority of our own decorations for the tables etc. However, after the event, the staff cleaned up the ballroom and organized and packed all of our decorations and belongings. This made our end of the cleanup for our family very quick and easy after a long weekend. Our reception was everything that we had hoped and planned for. We had about 180 people and the space was perfect. Between the ballroom, the foyer, the exterior hallways, and the balcony (as well as the museum before the start of the reception), guests had plenty of areas to mingle comfortably and enjoy themselves. We had plenty of room for our tables to be spaced appropriately, for coffee stations, a gelato station, a large cookie table, and a sizable dance floor. We chose to go with 4 bartenders at the bar and they kept the lines running very smoothly. And the ballroom is just beautiful, especially after taking time to plan out our table/chair decorations etc. Our guests had a fantastic time and they are still talking about the beauty and unique quality of the venue. We had high expectations and standards for every aspect of our reception, and our evening at Soldiers and Sailors was perfect. Kara G(wedding party)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 29-07-2018 This review is for brides who are foodies, who care about wine and ambiance, who think through details when planning an event. We had two events for wedding - a pre wedding event and the wedding reception. The pre wedding event was phenomenal. We used Big Burrito catering. They were amazing. It all went off without a hitch. The wedding reception was at S&S because the bride chose it. Big mistake. I have no idea whey it has great reviews. Please pay attention and learn from our errors: Unless your wedding is 250-300 people, the room is way to0 cavernous. It is FREEZING COLD. There is no feeling of intimacy. Everything is done on the cheap. We had one of their required caterers and the food was so mediocre. Especially compared to what we had done the night before. Appetizers were made with cheap ingredients. The choice of wine and beer was terrible. White zinfindel. Who in the world still serves that? Terrible over oaked Chardonnay. Bad red. Cheap wine. Cheap beer. Worst, there were no wine glasses at place settings. Guests had to go stand in line at the bar. There were not enough bartenders so the lines go long. So embarrassing. The bartenders did not know basic cocktails. The \"bread basket\" was hard rolls with Land O Lakes foil pack butters. Really??? I get it if this was 1990 but Pittsburgh has great food now. I'm just an aunt so didn't pick any of it . I felt sorry for bride's mom as it felt like tens of thousands of dollars wasted. We toasted with water glasses because the bar wasn't open in the room yet! The linens were cheap poly and the napkins slide of everyone's laps. They were always on the floor. Dinner was rushed. Salad served on six inch instead of eight inch plates so falling off the sides. Ugly flowers. Like I said if you care about food, wine...do not come here unless you can spend $150 per person on food and pick a better caterer. BBGROUP didn't cater there when we skedded it and they do now. Another one (Raina?) has good reviews too. Our's was just crap and not cheap. S&S staff seems intent on getting as much money as possible - why else would they not serve wine at table and make guests stand in line for drinks endlessly even though they are charing a lot per person. Why else would they serve hideous wine. Early on, my husband went to car where we had leftover wines from night before and snuck them in and our table drank that. Learn from our mistake - get references. Don't just read these reviews...delve a bit....think about how big the space is.....For us it was just a rip off and a badly run event. And some of that is on the bride for not thinking through the logistics....But a good portion is on the fact that S&S is trying to make as much profit as possible, hence the terrible wine choices....probably bottles that cost them less than $10....Yes it felt like the Titanic - just after it hit the iceberg. The balcony on the next floor circles around the entire ballroom and is a perfect addition to an already beautiful space. Amber worked with us untiringly. I'm very specific in my details and Amber was so accommodating and friendly. She went above and beyond to help me with everything I needed. She made up alcohol sheets for our open bar (which I just thought was a lovely, unique touch) and made sure we had access to everything we needed to make our day special. We thought the price of the hall was very reasonable in comparison to other venues in the area, especially when you factor in the history and architecture. Soldiers and Sailors is, first and foremost, a museum. They left the exhibits open for our guests so that they could peruse them during cocktail hour, which was wonderful. Nicole Manning(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 12-04-2013 Soldiers & Sailors is by far one of the most beautiful landmarks in Pittsburgh. To be able to have our wedding there was a dream come true. Details: You pay for the rental of the space, you pay them for the bar, and then you have to choose from their list of caterers (there are 4 to choose from) This ended up being okay, because their caterers offer a nice range of budgets to choose from. We went with The Chef and I Catering who were AWESOME (they were the \"value\" caterer; but you wouldn't have known it by how great they were). You also have to use their preferred vendors for linens, lighting, chairs etc. (the caterer can also provide linens for a much more affordable price) We had to rebook our date and we did find that some things that we had agreed to on our first date \"changed\" once we rebooked. Bummer, but somewhat expected in the wedding business. My biggest complaint about the venue was the slowness in responses. We understood that they aren't exclusively a wedding venue (museum, concert venue, much more); and due to this, they probably don't work normal business days/hours... however it would take multiple days at a time to get simple answers for things. The caterer ended up being much more helpful in answering a lot of our questions. Some of the issues with changes and responsiveness left a bad taste in our mouth, however when push came to shove... this venue is beyond words in terms of beauty. We wanted a place that was reminiscent of the 20s and 30s; a backdrop that needed simple/elegant decor; a place that felt like you were stepping back in time. This is THE place. It was STUNNING. As one guest put it \"I feel like I'm on the Titanic\" (a good thing!) The days before the wedding, the SS team stepped up and we turned it out. They also were flexible on a few points and were extremely kind. The day of the wedding was perfection, which is what matters in the end! Reviewed on 29-04-2013

Everything was beautiful there and Marjorie and Amber were very easy to work with. Marjorie responded to my emails quickly and were helpful in deciding caterers. We had a beautiful wedding there, I wouldn't have changed a thing. Reviewed on 14-10-2012

Breanne Lesniak(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 03-09-2011 S&S Hall is beautiful inside and out and provided beautiful pictures. The rental fee is pretty pricey but you do get a Brick outside in the walkway as a gift. I was disappointed that the bartenders did not do a last call and just closed the bar with no notice. We brought our own alcohol but either way we should have been notified so we could have the DJ announce it to our guests. I bumped up the service to a 4 from a 3, due to the bar, becasue Marjorie and Amber at the hall were extremely nice and helpful. Reviewed on 07-10-2011
Ashley Metz Leax(bride)1 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 27-05-2011 We held our wedding reception in late May 2011 at this location and were extremely disappointed with the lack of air conditioning and service of the bartenders. When looking for potential venues, we asked every facility if they had air conditioning. Soldiers and Sailors said they did and never mentioned there being any recent problems. However, the air conditioner was broken for the entire reception. My parents noticed right away before cocktail hour even began and brought it to the staff's attention. The staff had from 4:30 until 11:00pm to fix the problem and nothing was done to resolve the malfunctioning air conditioner. They kept saying they were \"making some calls\" or \"working on it\ Reviewed on 10-08-2011

Julie H(bride)4 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 07-08-2010 Soldiers and Sailors is an absolutely amazing venue... historical details, huge ballroom, just a really neat place overall! I absolutely loved it for our reception and would pick it again in an instant!\r\rA few points just to be aware of... There are older reviews that say everything is included - this is no longer the case. They have 4 caterers for you to choose from, and you get your alcohol from S&S. I found the people there to be helpful, but a tad disorganized at times (none of this came through at our actual event, thankfully). I was frustrated with a few details regarding the bar (they ran out of one type of wine during our cocktail hour!!!! we had paid for a 4.5 hour bar!!!). However they did take care of this and actually upgraded us to a better wine to replace the one that had run out. Their coordinator is soooo nice, but sometimes doesn't return phone calls or emails, so just stay on top of them. Again, the benefits outweigh the negatives, and it was just such a gorgeous, unique place!!!! Reviewed on 17-11-2010

Stephanie Zieger(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 26-04-2008 Soldiers and Sailors is such a beautiful location with character. We loved that it didn't look like a generic hotel ballroom. The huge floor made have a very large dance floor easy. Reviewed on 10-05-2010
Rachelle Buynak(bride)5 out of 5 Rating Wedding Date 11-09-2004 A planner is included in the cost, along with the caterer. Both were fabulous in helping plan. The food and service were impecable, it was catered by the Common Plea restaurant and I have yet to have better food at a wedding. Not to mention the venue is absolutely beautiful.;Beware of the hours...because it's a museum, security must be hired. So if you want to add time to your reception, you pay extra security by the hour. Reviewed on 25-09-2007
